Matt Barnes' Taunt - Grounds for NBA Review?

Post#1 » by Jack Bauer » Tue Mar 9, 2010 3:19 am

Just wondering but isn't what Barnes did, pretending to throw the ball into Kobe's mug, reviewable by the NBA to get assessed another technical foul?

Isn't that considered "taunting"? Some may even say it could be considered similar to pretending to fake punch someone.

They've done quite a few of those before, assessing technicals to players who have been taunting. Shouldn't that also be considered grounds for another assessed technical too?

If not, on what grounds?

What do you Laker fans think?

Non-Laker fans, if Barnes did to your favorite player like Lebron, Carmelo, or Wade, what would you think?

Anyway just wondering.

What, players aren't allowed to fake an in-bounds pass to try and find the open guy anymore? Please, it was fine and Kobe didn't even flinch.

Better yet, they should review Rondo's behind the back ball fakes. Someone could trip and fall and die. That's much more dangerous, imo.

Well fake passing is fine, BUT NOT right in front of their mug LoL!

It's just like when the NBA protects players from the "Karl Malone" swinging elbows, even if the next closest player is standing 6 feet away; you will still get a tech for swinging 'em!

From the angle that is being shown everywhere it looks like he pump fakes it right in Kobe's face but I played the game again on my tvo and I saw it at another angle and Barnes faked it to the left of Kobe. Kobe was just mean mugging Barnes and the media only shows that one angle. Also if you watch any replay you would think there would be some kind of a reaction from the immediate crowd.

You can even tell from this .gif if you look again..

Kobe is standing to the right of Barnes at an angle.

Please, it's called a ball fake.

Yes, it's called a ball fake and about 95% of NBA players use it every game.

Even if he was faking it at Kobe's face, that is in no way against any NBA rule. Which is why Stern will suspend Barnes for at least 4 games.

J-Rich bounced it off Boozer's head. Get over it.

Lol if Kobe was standing right infront of him he would have reacted in some way at least. He is obviously standing to the right of Barnes and the ball not even close to his face.

Clearly to the left of Kobe's face. Had it been at his face, Kobe would have flinched.

I thought it was right in Kobe's face when I first saw it, but the more and more I see the gif, and the replay of the game, it looks like it was off to Kobe's side. I'm surprised neither has been asked about it in an interview yet.

Lol, even with that gif it's still nearly impossible to see where Kobe's face was to the side of Barnes. Watching it in Slow Motion, you can't even tell if it was on the left/right side from this angle.

^ If the gif shows that the ball had passed through the left side of Kobe's face, showing depth of an angle existing, then I'd buy it, but it clearly doesn't. And their bodies are depthly symmetrical in the foreground too!

Anyway, what do you Laker fans think? Do you feel he deserves a fine?

And for everyone else, if Barnes did this to your fav player like Lebron, Carmelo, Dirk, or Wade, what would you think?

You're overreacting for no reason, and no one has bit on your thread. You fail on this one, try again.

From that .gif it looks like it was just a ball fake not aimed at Kobe's head.

But suppose he really was trying to throw it into bryant's face. Y'all really don't think that is grounds for a T? This is just speculation, so homers don't need to be aroused, but suppose any player does what it sort of looked like barnes might have done, ie fake throwing a ball straight into someones face. I think that's taunting, and NBA rules say taunting's a tech.

Either way, it's a measly tech. Not an after-the-fact review worthy incident.
