ALL-STAR - Richard Hamilton or Ray Allen?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Wed Jan 2, 2008 3:17 am

Which player is more deserving to make the all-star game this year?

Allen Likely would be 3rd all-star on best team in NBA

19.1 PPG 42.7 FG% 38.2 3pt% 91.7 FT%
Updated Stats 18.0 PPG 41.6 FG% 37.6 3pt% 91.9 FT%

RIP Likely would be 2nd all-star on 2nd best team in NBA

18.1 PPG 49.8 FG% 49.1 3pt% 80.4 FT%
Updated Stats 18.3 PPG 49.5 FG% 47.5 3pt% 82.6 FT%

Rebounds, Assists, Steals, Blocks, TO's are basically very similar

Should be noted that Allen's TS% is actually better than Hamilton's.

I would actually give the nod to Prince before Hamilton, so I don't think he's drastically more important to his team than Hamilton. And hell, with such a drastic turnaround Allen's gotta get some credit. I'd go with Allen.

Would be curious to see an analysis on why Allen isn't doesn't have an improved FG% on this team, let alone why he seems low per his standards.

Well record wise.

And if we're talking the East for all-star consideration, defiantly the top two teams in the East.

Allen started off slow, from what I've observed, because:

1) He's used to being a high scorer and has had to adjust his game more so than Pierce or Garnett.

Pierce still gets his fair share of isolations and post ups on the wing. The offense still runs through Garnett. But the Celts call far less plays for Allen and they don't yet fully utilize him coming off screens and such. I expect this to change more as the season goes on.

2) Allen reportedly had lingering pains from a sprained right ankle. This could explain why in the beginning of the season, the lift for his shot simply wasn't there.

Once he came back from the injury and got his rest, Allen's been picking up his shooting lately- so a lot of it might be contributed to being tired for some reason?

Assuming the Celts don't go into some sort of free fall I'd imagine Ray Ray is a lock. Not at all dissimilar to 2006 when the Pistons had 4 players make the All-Star team as a result of their spectacular start to the season. It's not at all uncommon for "better" players to be left off in favor of more "deserving" with regards to team success.

And the Celts are the darlings of the league right now; with their huge turn around and all the talk of the Big 3 it's hard to imagine any of them not being selected.

Let's assume the current balloting holds up and Wade & Kidd are your starters. I'm gonna pencil in Billups & Ray Ray as locks. That leaves one spot for Rip, JJ or Vince. I discount the likes of Redd & Gordon because their teams suck right now and obviously Arenas is injured.

This would be my ballot (starters as they currently sit in the balloting).

PG: Kidd // Billups
SG: Wade // Ray // Rip
SF: LeBron // Hedo // Butler
PF: KG // Pierce
C: Dwight // Bosh

It's a smallish lineup...and it snubs Shaq, Jamison, Vince & Joe Johnson. But I don't think a .500 team like the Wiz or Nets deserve a 2nd All-Star over the Magic or Pistons who are sitting comfortably a top their divisions. And I certainly don't think the Heat deserve a 2nd All-Star. Mostly I'd feel bad for JJ, and I wouldn't have any major complaint if he got the nod over Rip here. Granted they are only 2 games over .500, but at the moment the Hawks are sitting at 4th in the East. That should count for something.

Ray will get it over RIP. I feel like Billups will be the lone Pistons representative at the ASG.

Rip> Ray. Rip brings more to the table, defense, running n the break, passing. All Ray does is shoot and show-off his calves.

neither really deserve to be there.

As for Ray's fg%. He's on pace to shoot 556 three's this year...

for comparison that will be 68% of ALL 3 pointers Rip has taken in his previous 8 years..

Ray is on pace to do that this year alone.

Basically in the Celt's offense Ray is a third option and getting shots off ball rotation. He's beign used as a threat from every area behind the line to stretch the D and give us an advantage for 3 pointers.

The Celts lead the lead in defending the 3 pointer. The Celts also switch leading the league in 3 point % with TOR every week or so.

Ray Allen is the reason why we switch leading the league in the 3 pointer. And why we almost always end up with an advantage in 3s.

Hedo? I know he's having a great season but someone like Richard Jefferson would be more worthy IMO.

Based on what?

Richard Jefferson
PPG: 24.8
FG%: .465
3pt: .277
FT%: .842
RPG: 4.5
APG: 2.7
SPG: .90
MPG: 39.5

Hedo Turkoglu
PPG: 19.5
FG%: .439
3pt: .387
FT%: .828
RPG: 6.2
APG: 4.1
SPG: 1.12
MPG: 37.9

RJ is certainly scoring a few more ppg on pretty comparable efficiency (Hedo actually has the better eFG% and only half his shots are assisted compared to 75% of RJ's), although Hedo is grabbing more rebounds, streals & assists. From a statistical standpoint they are actually pretty darn even. The kicker for me is that the Magic are 22-12 and sitting atop their division while the Nets are sitting at about .500. IF I'm going to reward one of those two teams w/ a 2nd All-Star I'd much rather it be the division leader.

Does Allen's injury push him out and give Rip the edge?
