This is very, very gross. And the blurb at the bottom makes it even grosser.

FWIW, I cancelled my league pass over this. I know it won't do anything but I just find this revolting. And if I was a parent I'd be livid.

Where does your objection to this stem from more:

1. Perceived legitimacy of competition being compromised?
2. Increased probability that more humans will become addicted to gambling?
3. Other?

2. I don't worry about 1 at all.

I legit think smartphone gambling is a highly dangerous product. It is a 24/7 casino hooked up to all your savings/credit. These bookmakers employ the finest marketers to encourage as many people as possible to sign up. They employ some of the finest technical developers and psychologists in the world to ensure the apps maximize the amount of money people bet. The business model is built around (i) creating addicts; (ii) bankrupting them.

I expect these apps will destroy lives via ruinious debts, divorce and suicide.

...How do you spend years on national TV and make an egregious blunder like this? And of course the existence of ESPN bet makes it that much worse.

You paint a gloomy picture. I wanted to say too gloomy, but this is a similar society that allowed and quite frankly pushed smoking cigarettes for decades and allowed that industry to literally kill people before doing something about it, so...you're probably not wrong.

Eh...America is really prude and has a lot of overblown fears of a lot of things. Sports betting is nothing new, and neither are smartphones.

For a country that is supposed to be relatively liberal compared to most of the world, its conservative side really comes out when talking about gambling, alcohol, weed, and prostitution.

Look this board has a no political rule here which I'll respect. Just understand there is a lot you wrote on national cultures that I would respond to if that rule wasn't in place.

Sports betting is not new. I never claimed it was.

My focus was on how the technology is a complete game changer. Smartphone gambling is essentially frictionless access to all your available savings/credit. That is a very, very important difference in comparison to a brick and mortar casino in which you have to drive to and do not have easy access to all your savings/credit. That friction provides greater opportunity for someone to reflect on how much money they're losing.

neither are smartphones.

What I'd say is the existence of "ESPN Bet" is what causes that statement. And I'm not sure at all it was a blunder. The reason all these segments are now in games, halftime shows and sports channels is every person now has a 24/7 casino as far away as their pocket and the network it is the owner of the casino.

Just revolting.

Yep, strong agreeing here. Needs a lot more regulating than we're doing right now.

Back in my day I had to drive 45 minutes to my bookie, it's exponentially easier now.

Yup, friction matters. During that 45 minute drive to the bookie the bettor has a chance to reflect. And on the 45 minute drive home from losing money (which is the outcome for the vast majority of customers) the bettor has a chance to reflect. As a result of that gambling will be lower.

Yeah, I land on your side of the argument here. I think betting while legal should be treated like tobacco (as in you can't advertise).

It's absolutely insane that from the pre-game, to in-game, half-time and post-game commentary and analysis are 60-70% about lines, bets, wagers, and promotions to sign-up. All the kids that are growing up with this are the ones I fear for the most and think will lead to a gambling epidemic in the future.

I took my 6 year nephew to a game around Christmas and all inside the arena as you are walking towards you seat all the giant displays were full of odds, lines and o/u etc. He even asked me what the flashing, moving numbers meant and I played it off but I think it's pretty fried that we are normalizing this for little kids as a part of the game.

Also, I got into the same gambling argument in a group chat recently and the group was evenly split on banning gambling advertising vs. not and a few of the not people cited Europe and how legal it has been there for years. I did some more research and it turns out MPs in UK are moving to limit gambling advertising in sports due to negative effects on kids. So if that's happening in Europe now, I assume the same will happen in North America in 5-10 years as well.

I kinda liked Jontay Porter coming into the league. Can't imagine it ever works out for him if there's any truth to this.

Dude was apparently betting his own unders. If true it has to be a lifetime ban or it seriously undermines the credibility of the league.

This is the most predictable outcome imaginable once the NBA starting shoving gambling down everybody's throats. It's disgraceful what the league is doing.

They'll make an example out of Porter but the NBA is almost entirely to blame for this situation.

In the tech and media world, no they are not. People in college do not know any other life than one with a smart phone. There's enough data to see whether sports betting on your smartphone will lead to the end of western civilization.

Sports betting ads aren't going anywhere any time soon. If you watch sports you're going to see them for rather obvious reasons.

What's the utility on complaining about this every other day?
