The 2023-24 Tyrese Haliburton Thread

Post#1 » by The-Power » Tue Oct 31, 2023 5:07 pm

Not sure if there will be any traction in this thread but then it'll just die down naturally. But I'd be remiss if I didn't at least try to push the agenda.

We talk about Jokic as the exemplary basketball savant (he absolutely is) but I'd argue that Haliburton is a basketball savant himself. And, just like with Jokic, watching Haliburton is a pure joy. I hope he takes the next (small) step as a scorer to solidify his All-NBA candidacy. As a playmaker, he's already in the upper echelon of players in the NBA. He's that smart and crafty.

Great early-season form. 24 PPG (63% TS) and 12 APG with only 3 TOV in 32 MPG. The Pacers have almost a +10 net rating – posting a 125.5 ORTG – with him on the court albeit in a very small sample and facing a relatively weak schedule thus far. His defense is still fairly poor, though.

The stretch after the game in Utah might give us a better idea of where the Pacers and Haliburton himself stand this season as they face the Bucks, the 76ers twice (both in Philly), the Magic, Hawks and Raptors before the schedule becomes easier again.

I didn’t make any bet, but one that I had an eye on was Halliburton for MVP. 20/10 efficiently with ease, but was fun to watch in International ball because his passing and tempo helped others too.

The finishing being so good on top of everything else has me sold. Great young player. Not quite CP3 but one of the best PG talents I’ve seen.

He was a 21/10 guy last year and a pretty sick shooter. Very high offensive impact. 6th in the league in OEPM last year, high in OBPM, la la la la. He appears to be picking up where he left off. Would like to see him play 60+ games for the second time in his career.

His perimeter shooting inside the arc is going to settle, but he's a very good player.

He's a unique talent, for sure. For a PG he doesn't have a great handle, he's not a great athlete, he lacks strength and his pull-up game is unorthodox. But he's absolutely making the most of his talent. He always plays within himself. He knows his limitations and strengths and uses that knowledge perfectly to maximize his impact. One of the highest IQ players in the NBA who's a great passer and a highly accurate shooter, and the result is consistently high offensive impact night in and night out. Can't wait to see him in the playoffs soon, not least to give him enough time to adjust to playoff basketball before he's at his peak.

Last year offensively, he reminded me of CP3 more than any player I’ve seen with his pass first mentality despite having scoring chops out the wazoo, and the way he does it is very CP3-like with all the hesitations and subtle fakes to open up passes.

He’s no worse than Clippers CP3 offensively to me. But the defense is a big deal. The thing that made CP3 so unique is he had the bloodthirst defensively of a Beverley or PJ Tucker, despite the first class offensive game. It’s a rare combo.

Defense and quickness is definitely where I think he lacks in comparison to CP3. Watching Paul guard Prime KD and give even LeBron issues on top of the team defensive impact was impressive to say the least.

But I think Haliburton could be comparable offensively because he might be able to leverage his 3pt shooting into better team spacing. Haliburton is a guy I feel comfortable with comparing to Nash/CP3 offensively, I think he’ll get at that level within the next couple years and stay there for like 5+ years. Such a big fan of this guy.

Woah, slow down.

2015 CP3 is in the Curry/Nash/Magic tier offensively. You have Hali already there?

There's a lot to process. It's playoff resilience, portability, consistency. Haliburton has not been tested on any of those fronts yet.

But like purely in RS offense terms, yes.

But I don't think CP was Nash/Curry/Magic tier either. A step below that. But with probably more playoff resilience than any of them to make up some of the gap.

He reminds of me Curry a lot. Not in terms of play style, those are very different. But in terms of the genuine joy you can feel when he plays basketball, the excitement he has when his teammates have success, and even the expressions and cockiness where he'll talk to the crowd or celebrate demonstratively after important plays or when he's on a roll.

So happy he got handed the keys to an offense and that he is surrounded by players that fit next to him (on offense, that is). The Pacers currently have the 1st ranked offense with a 122.2 ORTG. But the even crazier part is that they have a 128.3 (!) ORTG with Haliburton on the floor. Still a small sample but 337 minutes isn't nothing and that number is just insane even if it won't be quite sustainable. For comparison, Jokic in 2022-23 had a career-high 125.6 on-court ORTG and anything over 120 is elite still.

Fun 3rd quarter and good bounce-back game from one of the worst performances of his career. Although he again turned the ball over in crunch time trying to create to win or seal the game. That's certainly something to keep an eye on but good that he gets experience in this regard already during the RS.

Also, the Pacers have clearly been the greatest cup-team in the history of the NBA along with the Lakers. The two cup-giants. That deserves a shout-out!

Hes obviously an OUTSTANDING offensive player......................but is he worst defensive guard in league too? A team w/ Myles, Bruce and Toppin shouldnt be this horrendous on defense...........3rd worst defense so far............by same token tho they shouldnt be best offense either............Weirdest team of season so far Orlando somehow makes more sense
