Predicting Atlanta's Best Closing Lineup

Trae Young, Dejounte Murray, Bogdan Bogdanovic, De'Andre Hunter and John Collins

Image

Trae Young and Dejounte Murray are givens. They're the two best players on the Atlanta Hawks, and even if they're both used to being ball-dominant, they're also unselfish enough to figure it out.

Young's range should widen driving lanes for Murray. The other side of the coin is Murray's slashing pulling defenders inside and giving Young a few more catch-and-shoot opportunities.

Surrounding those two with as much shooting as possible should be the goal from there. De'Andre Hunter shot 37.9 percent from deep last season. Bogdan Bogdanovic is at 38.4 percent for his career, and he adds a dash of playmaking, too.

Having that much shooting and creation around a big like John Collins, who can score as either a roll man or floor-spacer, is going to be impossible to defend.

I hope that he means it. Last year's D was a complete failure

Hawks defensive intensity has undeniably improved. But it seems we're now a mediocre offense...still early.

The 2nd quarter unit of DJ, The Holidaze, JJ and OO have struggled. It's an entirely new group of players not only to the team but playing with each other. It will take time.

Man AJG has scored more points in has last 6 minutes than JH has with his latest 65 minutes.

AJ Griffin - 4-6 fga, 2-3 3pa, 10 points
J Holiday - 4-18 fga, 1-12 3pa, 9 points

Milk dud doesn't know what to do with the young talent this team has.

Who's making the most of their playing time?

Pretty much just Trae and Dejounte (according to this metric).

Through 6 games, the most effective lineup (with at least 15 minutes played together) is

Okongwu
Collins
Hunter
DeJounte
Trae

They have a Net Rating of +13.2 with a mediocre Off Rating of 108 but an impressive Def Rating at 95. Too small of a sample size to mean anything.
But an interesting early tidbit.

The starting 5 has a Net Rating of +10 with an offensive rating of 114.

That lineup is the future, and it's legit. Health willing the Hawks will be relevant for a while

Whoa where did the random Philly guy come from... Capela has lost a step, or something. This team needs their main big man to live above the rim to make it work for everyone else. I could take a true 7 footer that can be physical and hit the 3 like Brook Lopez as another option.

Alas, Jarrett Culver does not appear long for this squad. It is encouraging that AJ Griffin hasn't been sent down to the minors...yet.

Ranking Every NBA Team's Starting Lineup So Far

8. Atlanta Hawks

Image

Trae Young, Dejounte Murray, De'Andre Hunter, John Collins and Clint Capela

Net Rating
: +10.2

There was supposed to be a bit of an adjustment period for the Trae Young-Dejounte Murray pairing. Things certainly aren’t perfect, but the early portion of the schedule has featured plenty of what made people optimistic about this backcourt.

Murray isn’t just an elite perimeter defender. He’s among the league’s best out there. And partnering him with De’Andre Hunter spares Trae Young from pretty much ever being assigned to a top option.

On the other end, Murray’s slashing has meshed well with Young’s ability to space the floor. John Collins' ability to check both of those boxes (though he’s started cold from three) also helps. And the gravity of Clint Capela’s rim runs pulls defenses away from everyone (though Onyeka Okongwu may be on his heels for that role).

CC letting us know he's not yet ready to give up that starting role to Okongwu!
