I was ok with him under Schlenk... not sure that I'm happy with him in such an important role. Qualifications seem quite light

I wish there was a real beat writer with standing to tell us what to make of all this…

Re: Hawks Restructure Front Office
Typically new GMs want their own coaches?? Fields was a long two way wing just like BK was I'm assuming he wants players in the same ilk... I mean I'm hoping he goes long and athletic guys at 3-5 to surround the guards. A two way five out big at center would be ideal.

From The Athletic:
Code: Select all
It became clear change was afoot this past summer when the Hawks promoted assistant Fields to general manager and Schlenk largely stepped back from day-to-day operations, though Fields still technically answered to him. There have been several rumblings of front office squabbles.

Why am I not surprised that in the midst of all this upheaval...the Owner's son has his fingerprints everywhere.

With so much nepotism in the organization, I fear we're turning into a laughing stock...

Looks like Ressler is turning into one of the worst owners in the league. Cheap and letting his son take over...this should be good in a really bad way

Re: Hawks Restructure Front Office
I can understand Schlenk wanting out. Trading talent. Trading picks for cash... Schlenk was by far the best drafter we've ever had as GM and you know that it wasn't his choice to go cheap and trade away the talent that he acquired.
Then the worst part for Schlenk is he has to deal with Ressler Jr. playing Mr. Bigshot. No GM is perfect but I will always be thankful for what Schlenk did for the Hawks. I'm sure that he had a vision of building a true winner

Imagine going from GSW and their near unlimited budget and winning history to this mess

Re: Hawks Restructure Front Office
I said before the best run organizations are the ones where owners hire the best Basketball people and LET THEM DO THEIR JOBS. I hate meddlesome owners making basketball decisions.
I remember Ressler chiming him that he had the final say on Milsap.
A well run organization requires continuity and stability in their front office, as long as TS is still around and involved, I'm ok with the transition. For Now.
But this makes me very uneasy.

Ressler sees the Hawks as an investment and business. Their purpose is not to win games but to make money.

Re: Hawks Restructure Front Office
Bucher does not have the greatest track record in terms of accuracy, but...
Fox SportsNBA FRONT OFFICE CONFIDENTIAL
PALACE INTRIGUE IN ATLANTA: The announcement that Atlanta Hawks team president Travis Schlenk was stepping back into an advisory role earlier this season caught the rest of the league off-guard as much as the Harden news. The only certainty is that no one is buying that Schlenk abruptly decided he wanted a lifestyle change.
One league source said the move was inspired by the souring relationship between Schlenk and both All-Star point guard Trae Young and the team’s director of basketball operations Nick Ressler, son of Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler.
Nick Ressler, Young, and Schlenk’s replacement, GM Landry Fields, are close and committed to building around Young, league sources say. The move to acquire DeJounte Murray from the San Antonio Spurs last summer was engineered by them, not Schlenk, according to those sources.

Re: Hawks Restructure Front Office
Fields was announced as the GM mid June. Murray trade was June 30th, so it does seem like it was his choice, otherwise why accept the player on the books when you soon will take the reigns. Schlenk has done well to add pieces via trade and draft.
However, his coaching choices have really sunk this team. The Collins contract is hamstringing flexibility, it was no bidders from outside teams that I remember...
Fields is 34, I'm sure he doesn't want an old dinosaur still coaching this team. I think Nate sensed that and confronted Trae in a last ditch effort to turn it around but backfired on him.
I think Collins knows he's being traded and going through the motions. The season so far has been a lost cause, but the trade deadline could make up for it atleast on an entertaining, intrigue level.

Incredibly fustrating. Just a mess.
Front Office
Over the past weeks, Atlanta has lost its team president, senior adviser, director of pro scouting, and vice president of player personnel. You read that correctly; Atlanta does not have a director of pro scouting in the middle of an NBA season.
Perhaps a scout could have helped craft a game plan for the ascendant play of Los Angeles' journeymen Dennis Schroder and Thomas Bryant. Or maybe develop a scheme to contain James, who was without several key teammates last night.
