Need to check the defense, but I have to admit that I'm seeing a bit of Garnett in his offense... am I dreaming?

I'm on the list of the highly intrigued as well. Seems to have all the makings of a modern big. Maybe petit Wembanyama lol :)

This guy wasn't on my radar. He has center length just not strength and size. Mo and Norris share similar skills. Landry has a type it seems.

Norris can make this 15 man roster. If you squint hard enough it looks like can play a big 3 in certain lineups. We'll see how they use these guys in SL first.

He needs a few years to gain some muscle and develop his awareness on both sides. He's got a solid tool kit to work with already. His tape shows why he went in the 2nd round. Could end up being a stud 2nd rounder down the road for sure.

Hawks worked him out last year when he tested the waters. Worked him out twice this year.

Mouhamed Gueye | Forward

Gueye went to the Atlanta Hawks at pick 39, and the Hawks seem like they are leaning toward giving him a real NBA contract rather than a two-way. The difference between getting a legitimate second-round contract (generally a four-year contract for around $6 Million, where the fourth season is a team option) versus a two-way is huge for a second-round pick. If Gueye does secure that four-year deal, he will be a much bigger part of the Hawks future, with a likelihood of playing legitimate NBA minutes over the course of that contract.

The Hawks’ roster could see a lot of tumultuous changes over the next couple of days, but as of now, it is built for Gueye to have a lot of success. Gueye will probably spend the beginning of his rookie season playing with the G-League team (College Park Skyhawks) but when he gets time with the main roster, he’ll have an opportunity to prove himself in a limited role. His untapped upside is certainly as a roll-man, as WSU lacked the guard-play to utilize him in that way, but the Hawks have arguably the best pick-and-roll PG in the NBA, and opportunities for Gueye to be used there.

Many expect the Hawks to move on from big-man Clint Capela in a trade in order to give more minutes to former lottery pick Onyeka Okongwu, and that could free up even more minutes for him as a center. If that happens, Gueye could fight for a real rotation role early.

Gueye’s NBA translation is a difficult one. While he is almost certainly a big-man offensively, with his best skills being his quick-leaping and ability to beat slow-footed big-men off the bounce, but he is more of a power forward defensively because he struggles to protect the rim consistently. This dichotomy makes him a bit of a tough fit in the NBA, but he could be some utility there as a versatile roll-man and a pure switch-5 on backup units. He would have to develop a lot to get to starter level, but there is some upside if the defensive instincts can improve.

Mouhamed Gueye | Washington State |Sophomore

6'10" | 213 lb | Wingspan: 7'3" | 20 years old

Above-the-rim athlete who flashed intriguing perimeter skills as a sophomore.

14.3 ppg -- 8.4 rpg -- 1.9apg

SHADES OF: Christian Wood, Thon Maker

PLUSES
  • Explosive finisher who could thrive in a spaced-out offense with a playmaking guard. He’s a constant lob threat, and with his handling ability, he can attack the basket himself for loud dunks inside.
  • Capable of affecting the game in different ways, showing potential in face-up situations since he can pull up from midrange and get to the basket.
  • Made progress as a shooter in college, making 49.3 percent of free throws as a freshman and then 67.4 percent as a sophomore. Though he hit under 30 percent of his 3s in both seasons, he has displayed solid touch on pull-ups, hook shots, and finishes around the rim.
  • Solid passer. Though he occasionally telegraphs the ball, he can make interior bounce pass feeds and quickly recognize kick-out opportunities following offensive rebounds. With his handle, he can also run dribble handoffs.
  • Active offensive rebounder. He loves to fly in for putbacks.
  • With his 7-foot-3 wingspan and great verticality, he could theoretically become a highly effective rim protector. Despite low block stats in college, he projects as an effective helper inside the paint.
  • Washington State occasionally trusted him to defend perimeter players, which led to some mixed results, but the best moments suggest he could thrive in a switch-heavy defense.

MINUSES
  • Gets a bit sloppy with the ball. Defenders often swipe to strip him, especially when he’s in the post. On drives to the basket, he’s reluctant to finish with his left hand, always trying to get back to his right.
  • Unproven perimeter shooter.
  • What position does he defend best? He’s lean, with a light frame. He would get overpowered by strong bigs and even some wings. But as a switch defender, he also gets too flat-footed at times, leading to blowbys.
  • Fundamentals must improve on defense. He’s often out of position in pick-and-roll and help situations.

Mo Gueye can really play

Atlanta Hawks rookie big man Mouhamed Gueye has been outstanding during the 2023 Las Vegas Summer League, showing off his on-ball and off-ball scoring potential as well as the ability to impact the game in multiple ways defensively. Averaging 10.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 41.7 percent from 3, Gueye not only looked good on the court but had the numbers to back it up as well.

Although the talent level in Summer League is a couple of tiers below what players can expect in the regular season, what Gueye has shown up to this point is enough to put him in serious consideration for a rotation spot as a rookie. Especially because, after trading John Collins to the Utah Jazz, the Atlanta Hawks don't have a power forward rotation that's set in stone.

What separates the 6-foot-11- and 210-pound Gueye from his positional competition could be his combination of height and efficiency from 3-point range, as the only forward in the Hawks' rotation to shoot above 35 percent from 3 last season was 6-foot-7 Saddiq Bey.

He's #1 on my newbie watch list. He has too much ball and shooting skills. Need to develop him as a PF / BIG SF maybe a bit of small ball point C
