It pains me to say it. But $25+ million is now role player money.

That's how inflated NBA salaries have become.

Except for the Hawks with an owner who has an 'avoid the tax at all cost' mentality.
We are pretty much dumping Murray's contract if they are looking for an expiring contract.

It feels like he's willing to approach the tax...but not for a bad/mediocre team.

Every summer we spend and extend.

Then every season we stink up the joint.

Ressler is clearly a cheapskate...but considering that we can't even sniff 50 wins in a season, I don't blame him for being reluctant to go into the tax right now.

My issue with TR is constantly switching direction and not listening to the architect of the team. In business, you hire experts, you follow their advice, and then terminate them if the performance of the organization suffers. And you never mix family with business.

Let me be clear, I don't want him to pay it just to pay it. But he needs to stop paying it lip service.

Regarding the bolded.....I've said before 'Hire basketball people and let them do Basketball things'
Messy Ressy keep getting involved. Players don't want to play for owners/front offices with this much instability.

A frontcourt rotation of Okongwu, Jalen and Collins would be pretty prolific right now.

Clearly more offensively productive without Capela fumbling easy passes and missing lobs/putbacks at key moments.

All I've ever heard from offline conversations is that John Collins was absolutely adored around the organization.
Frow the owner, to the owner's wife to the front office, scouts, training and administrative staffs -- and most of the other players.

Just a good kid who grew into an upstanding, young man.

He's one of my all time favorite Hawks players. I would have loved to keep him here for the duration of his career.

He has always said he wanted to be here in Atlanta.
Unfortunately the cost of the contract relative to his production soured a lot of the fans. Can't blame the guy for taking what the Hawks offered. I think CC stunted his development along with the general coaching who didn't invest enough in development of still a very young team.

He didn't take what the team offered. That was 4@90M and he turned it down and backed them into a corner. There was also the passive aggressive "need to feed me" media complaining that he did while still here. Time is showing that JC is not even a starter level player. But ya'll keep loving

No.
They made him an initial offer, he declined and decided to test his FA Market, which he did. It's called Free for a reason. Whatever market was determined, Hawks DECIDED to pay him, that's on THEM.
If Hawks feel backed into a corner, that's on THEM.

When he declined the 4 for $90 as an early extension, Hawks could have done the prudent thing and traded him, but like ALWAYS, they dangle players for trade then ultimately hold unto them for too long.
So again....it's a THEM PROBLEM.

Interesting how we're constantly inundated with pictures of Trae's kid. But this is maybe the second picture I've ever seen of John's...

The Hawks gave away the wrong overpaid big man.

Collins still an elite rim finisher/lob threat/offensive rebounder.
