Funny how it’s all played out. The Celtics, so far away now from that miserable first half of the season, have a very real chance to be champions. And perhaps the biggest reason is that Jayson Tatum became a true Celtics hero when he stopped trying to be one all the time.

In his past 14 playoff games, Tatum has scored 50+ points 1x, 40+ points 3x and 30+ points 8x

Jason Tatum has the highest ppg following a loss in Celtic history. Here is top 4:

2022 Tatum 32.6 ppg
1974 Havilchek 29 ppg
1972 Havilchek 29 ppg
1987 Bird 28.9 ppg

Not bad company.

Not to get into the Luka/Tatum thing, as it’s a tired argument. But I was looking at their minutes this seasons, look at the freaking difference. Tatum is a god damn workhorse, and yeah he has more stinkers than some top guys, but he also is always out there lol. Minutes between regular season+playoffs.

Tatum- 3334 minutes
Luka- 2776 minutes

He’s basically played 15-16 more games worth of minutes. Some people seriously undervalue availability, though the nba writers seemed to put more value on it this season.

Also, this.

Given the current state of the team, Brad's early success as a GM and Tatum's track record of playing in and winning a lot of playoff games.... Tatum has a chance to get pretty high up the playoff scoring leaders list. Off to a great start.

It's crazy this team basically doesn't have a backup three that plays. They just slide Jaylen up the small bits where Tatum is resting or at the four.

Tatum’s three point defense specifically his quick contests using his length and ability to bump off screens quickly and contest has been phenomenal, some of the best ever in the space and pace era.

Opponents in the playoffs are shooting 7 for 48 on three-pointers in the playoffs against Tatum’s contests, 14.6%. These players shoot 37.3% overall from three.

Durant, 0/5
Matthews, 2/5
Vincent, 1/4
Holiday, 1/3
Allan, Connaughton, Strus all 0/3
Butler, Oladipo, Lowry, Robinson, Dragic, Mills, Herro all 0/2
Tucker, 2/2
Seth Curry, 1/2
Kyrie, Lopez, Brown all 0/1

What do our armchair and/or real physicians make of Tatums injury? It has seemed to affect his shot for stretches but also fatigue may be playing a factor.

We’re gonna need him to be a full fledged superstar - with continued excellence in playmaking, much of which comes from his threat as a scorer - to have a shot against the Warriors imo (not to jinx us - still need to take care of business against the Heat).

Is it the type of nagging injury that 5-6 days of rest can help a lot?

He's banged up for sure, but he scored 18 points on 11 shots to go with 8 boards and 4 dimes in the second half of game 5 (h/t to @The Comedian).

He aight.

He was front ending all of his shots and was clearly not comfortable taking anything other than a set shot. Clearly his shoulder/arm is bothering him. His motion was exaggerated in the second half and that's when he started scoring, he's starting to compensate for his pain/discomfort.

But despite his struggles, he stayed calm, was excellent as our point-forward and played good defense. The best players contribute even when they aren't at their best. He's not a physical player so people question his toughness, but he deserves a lot more praise for the resilience he's shown.
