Giving Hauser a three year deal instead of all four years might be the biggest (only ?) mistake of Brad Stevens tenure as the front office executive.

Due to his recent other-worldly long range shooting, Hauser is now 5th in the league in 3p%, only .06% behind Jrue Holiday for the team lead. Holiday is in 3rd place leaguewide. Aaron Nesmith is 6th.

How great would it be if Hauser can snipe like this for the rest of the year.

Already a pain keeping track of our top 5, now you have to stay attached to Hauser too.

He needs to play in the playoffs. He's not Duncan Robinson or JJ Redick on defense.

C&S, off the dribble, off balance, side-steps, pump fakes, Sam the Hauser is really becoming a key component of this team.

It shouldnt be a surprise. You can't have the Celtics without a white dude shooting lights out really  . And this lad brings the 'spice'

good white Celtics shooters in the last 45 years:
Bird
Ainge
Ford
Sichting
Wedman
--35-year gap--
Hauser
who am I missing? I mean McHale had an amazing FG%, but not because he was a 'shooter' -- though in his latter years he had a couple of seasons of taking (and making some) 3s!

go back more than 45 years and there's no 3ptFGs, obviously, but Hondo was a good shooter, and I have to admit I don't really know Cowens' game, he shot FTs pretty well? And then in the 60s Nelson and Sharman and .. 50s Macauley? I'm grasping at straws by this point. Likely I took bait I shouldn't have bothered with.

Only 64 games with the Cs, but Wally Szczerbiak.

guys it's partly a joke you gave me an education piece here.

I was thinking:
50's - 60's Tommy (not really a sharpshooter but fine) and primarily Cousy,
60's and 70's pistol pete, havlicec, cowens,
80's Mchale, Ainge and primarily Larry,
no titles for 3 decades (*2008) and then
    Sam Hauser.
He's the secret sauce to win it again

It goes back to a welcome to C's Zingas video a madman put up in youtube suggesting that the C's can only be world beaters if we have at least one white dude shooting lights out.

Only 5 players have made 7+ threes in under 25 minutes this season. Hauser only one who's done it twice. Both on the road. Play this man in the playoffs.

Ime Udoka wouldn't even play Sam in the regular season.

Joe is a better coach than Ime, especially on offense.

Just look at Sam now!

Random Stat: Celtics are 27-1 when Hauser is a +10 or better in a game. 39-3 when Hauser is a +4 or better in a game.

I'm wondering if it's because Hauser was an UDFA.

I think 4 years is standard for a rookie contract that players get after being drafted. But Hauser was undrafted, then signed a 2-way contract, then got converted to standard contract for the last month or 2 of rookie season so was in a different spot.

Perhaps it's standard for those types of players to get no more than a 3 year contract?

After some more digging:

Hauser: UDFA, was on a 2-way, then got a 3 year contract w/ Celtics
Austin Reaves: UDFA, was on a 2-way, then got 4 year contract w/ Lakers
Jose Alvarado: UDFA, was on a 2-way, then got a 3 year contract w/ Pelicans
Haywood Highsmith: UDFA, was on a non-guaranteed contract after being signed from overseas, then got 3 year contract with Heat
Keon Ellis: UDFA, was on a 2-way, then got a 3 year contract w/ Kings

These are some UDFA guys who recently got a multi-year contract. Reaves is the only one who got a 4 year deal, and it makes sense - since contract is for like 9x more than these other guys contracts were for.

These other guys only got 3 years (and less $) because they were much less proven at the NBA level at the time they signed their contract (plus were UDFA, rather than drafted players)..

I know your post was joking but just adding some context to the discussion..

I know he is on a team option next year. Is he eligible for an extension? Or do we need to wait until 25/26 when he is a UFA.

Not sure if he is extension eligible this summer. But I'm assuming that one potential scenario that could happen is we decline the team option this summer and sign him to a new long term deal..similar to the deal Pritchard just got - perhaps slightly more $..

I mean, it would almost be comical if they force Hauser to play for only $2 mil next season, after the season he had this year..but I guess they could do it to save $ and then sign him to an extension for more legit $ that kicks in in the 25-26 season..

Really good read. Heat almost got Hauser. Celtics made him their top undrafted choice. Relationship with his agent (who reps Brown, Horford, Jrue, Grant formerly IINM) and Brad's history of building the Butler program helped in getting him too.

A group that included the Celtics, Warriors, Timberwolves, Spurs, Pelicans, Grizzlies, and Heat told Glushon they had interest in Hauser if he was not drafted. The Heat are known for turning undrafted prospects into sturdy NBA veterans, and Hauser’s camp agreed that if all offers were equal, he would join Miami’s summer league team.

“I saw what Duncan [Robinson] had done and Max Strus had done [with the Heat],” Hauser said. “Obviously, they have a good culture for producing guys like that.”

Meanwhile, the Celtics’ pursuit of Hauser was gaining momentum. There was brief debate among decision-makers about Hauser’s athleticism, how he would mesh with the current roster, and whether, at 6 feet 8 inches, he was best suited to play small forward or power forward in the NBA. But they concluded that these were minor concerns.

“We all agreed that he should be our top target once the draft ended,” Zarren said.
