I kind of like both of them, seems like a decent add for experience. But was he Knicks coach in the 99 finals? LJ is a PF, Duncan is a PF, LJ can guard him....Duncan proceeds to make uncontested shots over a guy 8 inches shorter than him. Hope Giannis doesn't do the same to Brissett.

Yes, Jeff Van Gundy was the Knicks coach in 99. The fact that he got the 8 seeded Knicks to the NBA finals that season, despite his best player (Ewing) being injured was probably one of the best coaching jobs of all-time.

Duncan is 5" taller than LJ, not 8. And it was a long time ago now so I don't recall who was defending Duncan (probably either Kurt Thomas, Camby or Chris Dudley most of the time, perhaps LJ some of the time)..obviously it was tough for the Knicks having to play that series without Ewing, while facing Duncan and Robinson.

I remember LJ basically being 6'4" listed at 6'7" . Regardless it was an awful defensive match-up. At least Duncan would have had to work a little harder to go around someone he didn't tower over.

Ironic that Semi and Grant were decent against Giannis. I guess the difference is Duncan was a more traditional big and Giannis a giant slasher/dunker

I kinda like Joe now, the way he’s talked this preseason and that he hasn’t been afraid of bringing in the big guns. He’s brought in a bunch of high level coaches. Say what you want, but most coaches prefer most of their underline to be fresh-meat no-names, probably not wanting the shine off of them. He even gave them their own groups to take on different things instead of letting one guy do it. He does have final say but when you have a group saying the same things it’s harder to brush it aside.

I don’t remember his interviews from last preseason but he’s been good so far. Much more personable. I still cringed a little at his interview with JJ Redick when he said something like he didn’t think he needed to coach defense last season, but otherwise he’s made a much better impression so far this year.

I love this move. Hopefully, he can correct the inefficiencies in Tatum’s (and Brown’s) game. I really think that Tatum should be one of the top two players in the NBA. The reason he isn’t at Giannis or Jokic’s level is because his game is so damn inefficient. He takes the hardest shots in the game and still scores 30 per. Imagine how good he would be if he took easier shots. No more step back 3’s unless the shot clock is running out. More post-ups. Way, way more cutting. More pull-ups in the lane instead of driving all the way to the basket. More transition/up-tempo offense instead of walking the ball up the floor. 3’s should be mostly set shots from kick outs instead of off-the-dribble. These are simple fixes that can give him 10+ easy points a night instead of the crazy 3’s and wild finishes at the rim he has every game. I mean, it’s so obvious. Why this has never been hammered home is anyone’s guess. I feel that JVG practical approach will address these issues.

You might not like to hear it, but the amount of effort Boston has made to bring in big time names to add to the coaching staff tells you all you need to know about how out of place Mazzula is. Dude needs all the help he can get to ensure we don’t have a failure like last years. Star players were really out there in game 3 of the ECF down 3-0 talking about how they have no identity, they don’t focus on defense and a bunch of other **** directly aimed at the coach and your homer glasses don’t allow you to see how awful Mazzula was.

Or it means they think he has potential and are putting in as much support as they can to help him realise it.

No one is saying he smashed it last season.

This has nothing to do with how they feel about Mazzulla. They had an opportunity to upgrade the coaching staff so they took it. Just like when they had an opportunity to upgrade the roster with Porzingis and Holiday, they took it. Just like if they had an opportunity to improve their front office staff they would take it. This is what well run organization do, they keep bringing in talented people to combat employee turnover and keep their edge on the competition.

Stevens is not shy about making big moves and has already fired his head coach before. If he didn't have complete confidence in Mazzulla to get the job done, Budenholzer or whomever would have already had his press conference as the new Celtics head coach.

Sounds like a lot of he say she say. And sounds like a lot of vague anecdotal stuff you're throwing out there.

If he was that bad, he would have been replaced.

Jaylen Brown shot 41.8% from the field, 16% from the three, and 66% from the free throw line (at pathetic 3 attempts per game) while taking more shots than anyone else on the team. Coaching wasn't why we lost the Heat series.

He's the "relief pitcher" if there has to be a coaching change during the season.

Damn the obsession for Jaylen Brown is insane. Lol

I didn’t say we lost the Heat series because of Joe. But there was an obvious disconnect between him and the team. When everybody is getting asked what the problem is and all your players say it’s the defense while your coach says it’s the offense, there’s a major disconnect and to me that’s coaching. When your game plan is going under and leaving shooters open on every screen, to the point where even TNT announcers are questioning it, that’s on the coaching. A season ago we beat the Heat with less while they had more, and that’s because Ime didn’t get his ass handed to him by Spo the way Joe did.
