OT : I'm coming to the States...

Post#1 » by LewisnotMiller » Thu Feb 29, 2024 2:56 am

My daughter made the final cut for a touring team, so I'll be heading over in December.
Not going to make it to Boston, so I'm just going to hope against hope I can get to a Celts away game.

Unlikely, given that I probably need to go to my daughter's games as a priority, but I'll be a heck of a lot closer to seeing my first live Celts game than previously.

Sounds like a wonderful father-daughter experience!!!

I presume it's not practical to extend the trip at its beginning or end so that you can do things outside the team schedule?

Sounds Great.
I hope that you do get a chance to attend a Celtics Game.

We're hoping to extend it at the end so the rest of my family can come over. That would be on the West Coast.

North Carolina, New York, Texas, LA.

(mixing up states and cities, because we might visit multiple places in some cases)
We'll get an NBA game, a NCAA, and a NCAAW, plus an NFL game as part of the trip, just don't know which ones.

They often try to work in a Dallas game because of Josh Green (and now Dante Exum).
NFL game is most likely Cowboys (I'm a Niner fan)

So, lots of firsts for me (and my daughter).

I grew up on the West Coast (LA area), so I'm quite supportive of that idea. :)

Museums and historical attractions are weak. Nature, amusement parks, and ambiance areas are strong.

Most underrated attraction in LA: Descanzo Gardens.

That said, I'm not so sure about December for it. Darn.

A perfect outcome would be a game at Madison Square Garden between the Knicks and the Celtics.

Wow - congratulations to you & your daughter. That's pretty impressive.

On the Texas part, if you're based in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are all doable drives if you're motivated. Slightly less obvious is that OKC is just as close to Dallas as the other 2.

For the NY side, beyond Knicks and Nets, PHI is a quick drive/train ride. BOS/WAS further.

I’m happy for you! Experience as much as you can when you can, try to push through being tired (not in an unhealthy way), and hope for a few experiences not on your to-do list.

Luck and fun wishes to you and your daughter/family!

How long is the Dallas/Houston drive?

Also, why would anybody voluntarily drive to Houston?

Easy one. 3.5 hr range.
Tough one. I've personally never done such a thing. I guess if you're in Texas already, you might as well see how bad it can get? Or you're Australian and don't know better and let some randos on an internet forum steer you wrong?

Spoiler:
I gave myself bonus points for the steer pun

The steer pun is bull, and not at all ballsy.

Look, I'm not sure what beef you have with 31to6, but if you don't like puns then a gentle prod would be better. Or, I can join in if you like and I'll try not to butcher it.

It's rare to have a thread this well done

The OKC part is interesting to me.
Previous tours had gone to an OKC home game, because Giddey had made himself available to meet the team. I'd been a little confused, since even I know OKC isn't in Texas...lol

The internal transfers are all included in the tour. We can deviate a little, but it's more a matter of waiting to see whether they can line anything good up with the teams (beyond just attending the game).
A previous tour group was allowed to run a full training sessions at the Staples Centre. That would be cool for a bunch of Aussie kids.

Except for Dallas and Oklahoma City, I think you'll find that Texas and the Oklahoma panhandle resemble the outback, except with more people.
