Thanks for the trouble of presenting a complete list. I guess it's informational in terms of who might be available via trade.

But as for realistric signings for the Celtics, including players like DeMar DeRozan and Klay Thompson and Tyus Jones are not guys the Celtics will give a moments thought. Out of their price range. And too old for a meaningful trade with the Celtics asset pool. Still, those of us who can read can skip over the obvious ones looking for WAY more than the Celtics will ever offer, like Kelly Oubre.

I personally feel good about our deep bench. I can’t see them tinkering with the top 8. Guys we control
Or under contract in Springer, Walsh, Queta I want to keep. Brissett (PO), Tillman and Kornet could be FA or gone. I assume we keep Tillman since they traded real assets for him. So are there minimum guys out there we like more than Kornet and Brissett? Maybe I haven’t looked to hard but I don’t think so. Both are good fit, but I could see them looking for a place with more PT. I personally hope we bring the whole band back with the exception of Svi. Replace him with a second rounder.

Under contract right now we have...

Holiday / Pritchard
White / Springer
Brown / Hauser / Walsh
Tatum
Porzingis / Horford / Queta

That's 11 players. Hauser has a team option that's obviously getting picked up or declined just to re-sign to an extension. He's coming back. Springer's salary feels expensive for a 2nd apron team, but they knew that going in so have to expect they'll keep him.

We have the #30 pick in the draft who is going to make the team no matter what position he plays. So that's 12 players.

Brissett has a player option. They lack depth at his position as a big wing to play the 4 so it'd make sense to bring him back as a 12th player. That can be via him opting in or, more likely, him opting out and re-signing on another 2 year deal with a player option in year 2. We can give him a non-bird rights raise I think which is more than the minimum by a bit and it's hard to see anyone outbidding for him IMO. That gets us up to 13 players.

I'd expect that we go most of the year with only 14 players to save on tax, so now we're really down to the last spot IMO. It'd somewhat hard to gauge because I included the #30 pick without assigning a position. If that player isn't a big man, then assuredly they will be using this last spot on one. You almost have to with the Porzingis/Horford load management concerns. I'm sure Kornet or Tillman would be their first choice. And honestly, even if that rookie is a big man, they'd probably prefer to bring back Kornet or Tillman and waive Queta if they can make the numbers work.

So to add to the 11 guys under contract, I'd probably try to keep Brissett and Tillman and then my 1st round pick would be the 14th spot, which I consider the last opening. Both Tillman and Brissett are 25, so they have some career lifespan ahead of them and I trust both of them to play 10-15 minutes in the regular season. Particularly as you look forward to Horford maybe (likely?) retiring after next year, guys who can fill in at the PF/C spots are where the main opening will be.

Cs not going to use their 1st rnd pick this year.

Expect Brad to trade down or trade for a future pick.

I like all of our guys, and will feel sad to see any of them leave. I would be surprised if Luke is with us next year, as I believe some team will offer him more than we are able/prepared to pay, particularly after we signed Queta (a good signing). Luke deserves to reap the reward of a higher salary. He's proven to be a solid player, and I'm sure any team in need of a quality back-up center will be considering adding him, particularly as he likely will not command big bucks (just more than what the Celtics can pay). Hope to keep Tillman and Brisette. Svi too, though his minutes could go to Walsh, or perhaps Drew Peterson (intrigued by him) if he leaves. It will come down to money, and some of our guys will be looking to get more than the minimum. My guess is that there is a good chance they will receive better offers from other teams given our financial situation. We could be looking for replacements for Kornet, Tillman, Brissett, and Svi.

The NBA is hard when it comes to projecting guys like Kornet because of the mechanics involved in signings. For a team to give Kornet more than the vet minimum, they have to either have cap space or an exception to use.

Bobby Marks' early projections have 7 cap space teams and 10 teams over the apron. I think those 10 teams over the apron (9 other teams, as we are one of them) will be limited to vet min deals for him like us. So out of the other 29 teams, right off the bat, there's 9 of them that won't be able to outbid us for him. Of the cap space teams, is Kornet really a guy some team is going to want to lock in money to? Of the exception teams, is Kornet going to be one of the best FAs to sign for an exception in a league where a lot of teams don't have one so the supply of players might exceed the number of spots.

I'm not saying Kornet won't get more than a minimum offer somewhere. But I will say that the league's salary structure forces a lot of guys like him to have to settle for the minimum because the mechanics of actually getting a team to offer more are hard.

Kornet, Queta & Walsh have made good cases for themselves.
Kornet filling in for Porzingis to end Round 1, was really impressive.

I'd be happy to keep Tillman if we could, but he may not want to stay if Horford and Kornet continue to earn strong playing time.

Hmm this is a good rationale. My gut feeling has been they like Kornet and he likes the team and there is a fit for both sides so he prob comes back.

OTOH there’s the chance someone throws 3/12 at him or whatever and maybe the team doesn’t want to match that. Or maybe they just pay him that anyways but it’s a good point the teams that would be most likely to want to do that might not be able to.

For the big picture I feel like everyone comes back except for Brissett and that the first rounder gets kicked into the second round and that guy gets a two-way.

So I think that leaves one more guy to make hit 14 and that seems like what they like to do. Idk why I’m irrationally curious about what Davison ends up with though lol.

Which apron?

The second apron prevents pretty much any signing except your own guys or vet min, but will 10 teams really be over it?

Kornet seems like a classic "system guy." More valuable to us for knowledge of our system and just prolonged competence than he would be to other teams. Doesn't really have upside that makes people want to spend capspace. He's just a solid backup that works here. Also at 30ish after bouncing around initially, I'm pretty sure he feels settled and likes it here.

If the Cs want him back, I still bet he'd sign for the fully guaranteed minimum.

... the bigger question for me is, should the Cs want him back? He's been totally competent and worth more than you expect to get from a minimum salary slot, but I think bringing him back likely means one of X or Queta doesn't come back. They both have more upside than Kornet.

My hope is that Brisset opts out to chase a bigger role on another team, and you sign X as the backup 4. Then maybe there room for KP, Al, Kornet and Queta is injury insurance until Al retires.

He'll be 29 in July and has nice-looking stats. That seems like more than a minimum-salary player.

I just don't see another team being more excited about Kornet than Boston currently is.

If it did take more than the minimum to keep him here, would you do it?

Side note, do people want to see us sign Jerdarrian? He can't be a 2 way anymore, not sure he can really contribute enough to the big club to warrant the roster spot. But he's done everything you'd want him to in the D league, including being consistently one of the best players in that league. Seems like a shame to get nothing out of the pick and his development.

It's not a sexy name but from that list Justin Holiday stands out as a potential minimum signing.

35 years old, so he's only going to be signing minimum deals or getting camp invites. On a very good team in Denver, so his low MPG alone doesn't necessarily imply he's cooked. Ring-chaser age. Then his brother is here, so he'd have some added incentive to pick Boston.

Of course.

Doesn't really have upside that makes people want to spend capspace. He's just a solid backup that works here. Also at 30ish after bouncing around initially, I'm pretty sure he feels settled and likes it here.

I think Kornet is going to have more of a market than people in this forum think. NBA has been watching, teams need a backup center and they know what Kornet can do. Could easily see a team giving Kornet 3 years and $15 million total. Do the Celtics match?
