Should TA start at the point on Saturday?

Post#1 » by TheCelticsMan » Fri Jan 4, 2008 11:21 pm

Billups KILLED us last time. Rondo is still learning how to cover pg's with moves like Billups in 1 on 1 coverage, and it hurt us last time. I think tony allen might be a bit more suited for the job come saturday, or at least have more minutes than usual. I think Billups very well could be the deciding factor in this game, and if he is partially shut down this will mean a huge boost for the C's. Worst comes to worst, TA gets his usual minutes, Rondo does a mediocre job, and we edge away with a win...or lose again. I honestly think TA will cover Billups better come sat.

No.

Rondo dominated Billups in the first half of that game -- he got around him with ease and was draining jumpers and driving to the basket at will. He then faded in the 2nd half. Billups is a great player. He'll get his. I'm sure Tony will defend him in spots but he won't and shouldn't start the game. Tony is not a good point guard -- he's just the best option we have at times.

he's not a good point guard, but he's a better one on one defender than rondo right now. and it's not all the time, Rondo is a good defensive player. He's just still working out the kinks in some 1 on 1 situations

We've got a quick learner in Rondo & I want him to get as much experience, especially against a good veteran pg that the C's will likely face in the conference finals, as possible.

Rondo is gonna be our pg come playoff time either way so i want him learning now compared to getting lit up when the games are a LOT more important

Doc Rivers was quoted after the first Detroit game saying that he anticipated using Tony Allen on Billups more in the rematch.

That said, I think Rondo will start, with Tony Allen primarily coming in as a defensive stopper.

What I expect is instead of the normal rotation of House getting 17 mpg and Tony Allen 10 mpg, that House will see minimal action, although he'll get his moment under the lights to heave up a few just in case Eddie is "on", in which case he can light it up.

But other than a brief moment for House, I expect to use Tony Allen a lot more in tomorrow's Detroit game, primarily for his ability to contain Billups. You might see Rondo get more of his minutes against the Detroit backup point guards, instead of House getting them.

Tony Allen will wind up backing up Rondo and Ray Allen against Detroit.

Just a hunch.

no off the bench spark. Rondo can take billups off the dribble.

No way Tony Allen can advance the ball against Billups. Maybe Ray can play some point on offense, but I do not want Tony in that role. Guarding Billups? Fine.

It's like Chris Paul's nickname. I understand CB, but 3? C'mon now.

No I know Chris Paul's. Except people are taking it too far and giving it to anyone with a number and two initials.

Do you remember what happened when they put TA on Billups? It caused us the game. They can't put Tony at the point this game, Detroit's defense will feast on him (his handle isn't that great). Plus I rather have Rondo gain experience against a foe we will likely see when it counts.

Tony was also fresh off the bench then, and if you didn't notice he got a steal on the possession before that gave us a chance to win. He's just starting to adapt his game now to compensate for the damage his most recent injury has done, and is really starting to find himself again. I'd easily give him some serious minutes off the bench to try and D up Chaucney. It can't be any worse than how he abuses Rondo in the post anyhow.

Yeah I noticed the steal. My point is that no matter who we put on him Billups going to get his, he's a star player. So we might as well start the guy that is going to be facing the most now and in the playoffs. Plus Rondo seemed to blow right past Chauncey at will and matched Billups on everything except foul shots 0-1 as opposed to 10-11 (If Rondo were to get that respect from the refs we would be unstoppable because of his speed and ability to drive to the basket).
