Celtics sign Patrick O'Bryant!

Post#1 » by BillessuR6 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 8:03 pm

The Celtics have signed Warriors free agent center Patrick O'Bryant to a two-year deal, according to NBA sources. The 7-foot-0, 260-pounder was the ninth overall pick out of Bradley in the 2006 NBA Draft by Golden State, but played sparingly in two seasons. The Celtics worked out O'Bryant, who is expected to backup center Kendrick Perkins, a week ago at their training facilty in Waltham

I have never been a big fan but if Danny thinks he can help this team I trust him!

Welcome POB!

Interesting signing especially after it was reported how poor of a workout he had. He is big and has some tools, hopefully Clifford Ray can work some magic with him.

It will be interesting to see if any of the MLE was used to sign him. If it was then we might have given up hope of retaining Posey.

A young, talented, seven footer. I like this deal. He gives us some size to match up with the bigger teams in the league, and if Cliffy Ray can max out his potential, this is an awesome pickup.

This better be for the minimum. And non-guaranteed 2nd year...

The best news is that this means we won't be signing Kwame Brown.

I like this move. His main issue in Golden State was that he's not built for a running game. We'll have to see how the finances work out and what they mean in terms of signing Posey. I like it, another tough body to clean the paint.

I expected them to go the other way and sign a low upside proven vet, rather than a high upside, all potential guy.

Cool...hopefully he can be a good backup off the bench for Perk.

Wonder what the details are of this signing. I find it hard to believe they would commit 2 years to POB. I'm thinking at the least the Celtics have protected themselves by making the 2nd year a team option.

Well, I'm sure it is for short money. Also, his poor workout reports from Jeff Twiss could have been to discourage other teams and keep his price down. They won't come out and say, "wow, this guy had a great workout. I hope we can sign him real cheap", if you know what I mean.

As long as the 2nd year is a team option, this seems like a relatively harmless deal...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

I like this signing. Can you imagine him practicing against Perk and Powe, beside KG and BBD, with TT and CR in his ear? They'll have him in shape in no time. Just turned 22 too, so younger than a lot of these guys coming out of college now.

Well lets all hope that he can learn a thing or two from KG. Maybe he can turn into a steal.

One thing is for sure, they will quickly find out how much he wants to compete. That seems to be one of his big issues in Golden State. I don't think they would have given up on him so easily if he showed max effort. How often do you see a lottery pick released that soon??? Especially a 7 footer.

Do you have any idea about POB? POB makes Kwame look like Dwight Howard.

He may not work out, but big men are notoriously slow to develop, and he was going up against NBA centers when he was 20. Maybe they can't toughen him up, if toughening up is what he needs, but he's got about as good a situation here as I can imagine.
