Ch. 5 reports Steph on his way!

SportsCenter 5’s Mike Dowling has learned that the Knicks and disgruntled guard Stephon Marbury have reached an agreement to buy out Marbury’s contract, making him a free agent after he clears waivers.

League sources tell SportsCenter 5 that once he clears waivers (48 hour period), Marbury will sign a contract with the Boston Celtics, bolstering the team’s bench as it deals with several injuries.

At one time, Marbury was one of the premier guards in the NBA, and has averaged nearly 20 points and 8 assists per game for his career. He has yet to play this season due to conflicts with Knicks management. He did play with Kevin Garnett for three seasons in Minnesota.

ESPN says that too.....

The New York Knicks and Stephon Marbury were nearing a buyout agreement Tuesday afternoon that would clear the way for Marbury to sign with the Boston Celtics, according to sources close to the situation.

Im stil not 100% convinced as no one else has even reported details of the meeting

Hes probably finally been bought out, but the Boston stuff is speculation at this point and other teams will bid for him

I for one, welcome Steph if he comes here though.. i dont care about the cancer comments, or the headcase portrayal of this guy.. he can play, and obviously wants to win if hes coming here

Marbury/Pruitt
House/TA/JR
Scal/Walker
Powe
Moore/Davis

Our bench could go from nothing to pretty strong in the space of 3 days ( i think moving Eddie to the 2 guard dramatically improves his game, aswell as the additions of Moore and Marbury)

According to sources, the sides were very close to an agreement as soon as Marbury reached agreement with the Knicks on a buyout.

Well at least it's finally done. Sheesh this thing dragged out for so damn long.

This is Marbury's one chance to finally shed the cancer label and show that when put on a team where he doesn't have to be top dog....he can help.

I'm hopeful that he will fall in line with the veteran leadership the C's have.

I wonder if him and Eddie will speak about Steph's earlier comments.

Regardless, we are not set for the stretch run and this is the team we're going to battle with. Let's hope Danny made the right choice.

From the espn.com article:

Last week, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith reported that multiple Celtics players had recently reached out to Marbury, urging him to forfeit some salary in his long-contentious negotiations with the Knicks to prove to skeptics that he could make an impact with a championship-caliber team.

Helluva move by you guys and I am a Knick fan. Dude is so motivated right now and will want to take it out on everyone for being banished even though he did everything he was told to do prior to the season. DAntoni just had a personal vendetta against him from day 1 and no matter how hard Step tried he wouldent get out of the hold.

Dude will be beastin, thank god NYK only sees Boston I think 1 more time this year......Unless we get the 8th seed. I cant say I will root for Boston but I hope Step does well. He's a good dude and had been classy this year with the handling of a poor situation.

He isnt as much of a ballhog as he is perceived, he just had to take a lot of the shots in past years with us because our team had no legit scorers(Even then not so much) and often or not he had to pass downlow to Curry or see Crawford brick a shot.

In any game that's mattered or crucial moment,
Ray Allen has been the backup SF from Day 1 this year.

Since Ray plays 11 mpg at SF, and 25 mpg at SG;
there are actually about 24 mpg at SG open,
in addition to the 15 PG minutes available when Rondo is off the floor.

Of the 39 available guard minutes,
Eddie will probably continue to get his 17 mpg.

That leaves a pretty big door for Steph.
Plus, the Celtics will finally have a ball handler who can protect the ball,
and will be able to give Rajon a break down the stretch.

Pierce too, in effect, since If Ray slides over to the 3 like has done all year,
there is a true shooter/scorer who can play the SG spot as well.
And Steph's career average of 7.8 APG after 800 games is nothing to sneeze it,
he did start his NBA career at age 19,
so even though he's sat out the past 13 months, he's got tons of experience.

Another plus is that Paul Pierce and Ray Allen can cut back their minutes
heading to the playoffs, now that there is another scorer/penetrator on the team.

In the playoffs they'll play their ususal minutes,
but Steph will have plenty available.

Danny's got the Midas touch. It's like Red said, the guy's just lucky (and good).

So when's his first game, Friday or Sunday?
He won't be able to officially join the C's til Friday but I'm sure they've had an open line of communication for a bit now.

If Marbury is sealed (maybe even will score Smith too), I will sign for it. Making current team from almost a scratch was brilliant move already, continuing it will only seal his legacy.

NBA.com has this link to a Sports Illustrated Article

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/b ... index.html

that says although the buyout is not official,
it's expected to be finalized Tuesday night.
If he's waived by tonight,
he'll clear waivers 10 AM Friday.
