Diamondbacks sign Max Scherzer

Post#1 » by bigboy1234 » Thu May 31, 2007 6:56 am

Max Scherzer joined the Diamondbacks with moments to spare.

Scherzer, the last remaining unsigned first-round pick from the 2006 draft, agreed in principle to a major league contract worth $4.3 million in guaranteed money (and as much as $6 million), pending the approval of Major League Baseball. He came to terms with the club minutes before the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline, after which he would have re-entered the 2007 draft.

Well, Scherzer projects as a 2 or 3 starter or a light-out closer... i think you can never have too many great pitching prospects, so I'm happy we made this deal.

He'll more than likely end up being a reliever. He really only has 2 pitches with his fastball and slider. His fastball is phenominal and his slider is also a good pitch. He's tried throwing a changeup but not really successfully. I think the D'Backs will try him out as a starter to start off, then he'll eventually become a reliever.

He better get himself a better change first. You can get by in the lower minors and even sometimes in AA with a killer fastball-slider combo like he does, but to be a good starter in the bigs I think he needs a change.
