Struck under the table deals with prospects before he was allowed to. Might've bought Kevin Maitan an apartment too, I'm not sure.
It's something that every team does but Coppolela was just so brazen and reckless about it, he even bragged about signing Maitan to a much lower deal than market value at one point. Just absolutely foolish.
