MLB's Next 10 Stars to Know Before Their 2019 Breakouts

Kyle Wright, RHP, Atlanta Braves



The fifth overall pick in the 2017 amateur draft, Kyle Wright rose from Double-A to the big leagues in 2018 and broke camp with the Atlanta Braves this season.

His first start of 2019 was bumpy. The 23-year-old coughed up three earned runs and five walks in 4.1 frames on Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies, though he also struck out four.

Overall, he has a fastball that touches the upper-90s and a plus slider and changeup befitting a top-of-the-rotation arm.

The up-and-coming Braves should afford him every opportunity to mature into an ace as they chase a second straight National League East title.

Soroka is back! What a game he had Saturday - 5 perfect innings with 7 K's. And Riley hit 2 homers to support him. Braves need to avoid trade offers for both of them. Donaldson was the only major acquisition the Braves made in the offseason, and I'm starting to think we could have spent that money more wisely. But it's early.

Yeah, Jackson catching in the bigs surprised me. Braves might want to get some organizational depth at catcher. I prefer grizzled veterans at backup catcher - even if they don't hit much.

William Contreras really starting to tear it up in high A Florida - 3 or more hits in 3 of the last 4 games - got his batting average up to .333, OBP is .400. Not many homers but lots of doubles, and as he gets stronger - some of those doubles go for homers. He's a heckuva catching prospect.

Here's a guy who's probably ready to shoot up on the Braves minor leaguer ratings: Jasseel De La Cruz. I saw someplace where he was the Braves 27th ranked pitching prospect coming into the season. Well, he's probably skipping a whole lot of the 26 ahead of him. He recently got promoted to High A and so far this season has 37 SO's vs 8 walks in 30 innings. He apparently physically developed over the offseason, and it's made a huge difference. Riley had another 2 homer game the other day. Kid has answered all the questions on him in the minors - has 10 homer and 9 doubles in 113 at bats - OPS is 1.014, got his SO rate down from .284 per plate appearance to .205. Hate to say it, but Donaldson's blocking him - he's got nothing left to prove in AAA. They've only used him at 3B and IB at Gwinnett, so I guess they don't think he can play OF?
