Hagadone continues to dominate since that awful performance to open up his pro career:
2 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 3 K's, 2/1 GO/AO.

GCL Red Sox went off for 17 runs today. Lin, 2-6 with a homer and a 3B. Tejeda was 2-4 with a 3B, BB and 3 runs scored-- now hitting .313.

Ellsbury: 2-3 with 2 singles in game 1 of the PawSox DH. Lowrie 0-2 with a HBP.

Josh Reddick took 1st rounder Pedro Beato deep.

Ellsbury with 2 more hits so far in Game 2. 2-3 with a few more singles and a SB. Lowrie is 2-3 with a 2B and 2 RBI's-- now hitting .345 in AAA.

Aaron Bates promoted to Portland. About **** time.

Masterson on the mound tonight.

Ellsbury has already doubled and then scored a run on an RBI single by Lowrie. Both are 1-1.

Per Amalie Benjamin on the Extra Bases blog: Clay likely to be called up to start Friday. He'd be on regular rest too as he just pitched: 5 IP, 3 hits, 2 walks, 2 HR's, 2 earned, 9 K's. He only threw 80 pitches which is a little surprising since while that wasn't his best start, it isn't like he was ineffective. Maybe they want him a little more rested than usual for Friday's potential start?

Ellsbury is on fire since returning from the DL. 2 more hits (in 5 AB's) to raise his AVG to .293 and to .460 since returning from the DL 9 games ago. Jed Lowrie continues to dominate Triple-A pitching going 2-4 with a 2B. Now hitting .338 with a .960+ OPS in Triple-A.

Aaron Bates went deep in his 2nd game at Double-A.

Another solid start for Kris Johnson: 5 1/3 IP, 5 hits, 1 earned, 0 walks, 5 K's and an 8/3 GO/AO.

Lars homered for the 2nd straight game. After a major slump, he has really picked it up in August hitting .333 with a .933 OPS. Jason Place was 2-2 with a BB and an outfield assist.

Dustin Richardson in his Hi-A debut: 6 IP, 3 H, ER, 0 BB, 6 K. He's probably the fifth best pitching prospect in the system after Buchholz, Bowden, Masterson and Johnson.

Also: Josh Reddick.

Will Middlebrooks signed according to Kevin Goldstein's BP chat. Deal is worth just under $1.2M.

Or 925K.

They also signed a few more.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=227

They must really like Britton, though the brief scouting report doesn't seem like it is worth it.

Hopefully there are a couple more signings, or they focus on international signings. I seem to remember Henry or someone saying they'd re-invest the money not spent on Clemens in the amateur scouting department.

So apparently they didn't even sign Matthews. What a totally crappy draft; something I'd expect out of a middle of the road team; not one with a hundred million dollar player development machine. Hopefully they make a few big splashes in the international scouting department. Which they might have done today, actually.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/r ... first.html

No scouting report or on how much he signed for.

The Tigers spent more on Porcello than the Red Sox did on the entire draft. Pitiful.

Agreed. I wouldn't call it an awful draft, but it was pretty mediocre especially considering how much money the Red Sox can throw around.

Any idea how next years draft is supposed to be? It could be an '05 like year if the draft is decent and the Red Sox use their picks semi-wisely.

They'll have at least a supplemental from Gagne, and possibly a supplemental and a 1st. Lowell would bring the same if they don't want to give him 2-3 years and they'll have the pick they received as compensation for Hunter Morris. That, and of course, all of their own picks-- provided they don't go shopping for the next Julio Lugo.

As for the minors yesterday, Masterson got smacked around for the 2nd game but Hagadone threw 3 more perfect innings. The guy has been completely lights out since that horrible debut.

3 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 3 K's yesterday. 11 IP, 0.00 ERA, 3 hits, 14/2 K/BB in 5 short starts since his debut.

Do you post on soxprospects.com?

Yeah, next year's draft could be pretty cool.

Potential comp picks for Gagne, Lowell, Schilling, Tavarez, the comp pick for Hunter Morris. Hell yeah.

I wonder if Masterson is getting a tired arm?. He tossed 147.2 IP last year and he is up to 144 right now. Either that, or it's just two games to make up for the otherworldly 10-15 that preceded it.

I do not post there, just read it. I've tried signing up before but never not an activation e-mail.

As for Masterson, it is possible he is getting tired but a 2 game sample size isn't much to go on. You'd think he would gradually slow down more and more if he was getting more tired with each outing but it went from dominance to getting hammered overnight. I think part of it is he isn't as good as he is pitching, as well. Still, he is nowhere near as bad as he has pitched the last 2 starts.

BOWDEN!

7 IP, 5 H, ER, 0 BB, 7 K

JOHNSON!

6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Portland is gonna be fun to follow next year with a staff of Bowden-Masterson-Johnson-Hagadone likely at some point. The first three will likely all start there, at the very least. Hell, Mike Rozier will probably be there, too.

According to BA, Masterson is going on the DL. That could explain his struggles a bit.

Tejeda went 3-5 with a walk for Lowell. He's now 8-20 with a walk and 2 K at Lowell. He's 17.

Brandon Moss: the man. Played CF today and had a decent game. 2-3, 2 HR, BB, K. Please make him the everyday LF next year and trade Manny.

Jed Lowrie is pretty good, too. 1-3 with a double. Too bad about Lugo, though. Hopefully they work him into SS sometime around the ASB next year and he can take over fulltime in 2009 when Julio Lugo is killed by rabid fans.

Josh Reddick.

Bad start for Clay: 3 IP (63 pitches), 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 3 K's. I actually think it is a good thing that he wasn't sharp tonight as that limits his innings and increases the odds that he can pitch in September and maybe even October. Have a few more **** starts where you are pulled after 3, Clay. Please?

Bowden with a solid start. 6 IP, 5 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 5 K's.

Nice day/night for Red Sox prospects so far.

Ryan Dent: 4-4, 3 runs scored, HR, triple, 2 SB's.

Oscar Tejeda: 2-3, triple, 2 RBI's (I think, didn't double check), SB so far. Just checked: it is 2 RBI's.

Aaron Bates: 1-3, HR, 4 RBI's (not a grand slam, 3 run shot).

Jason Place: 1-2, 3-run HR.

Jacoby Ellsbury: Set a Pawtucket hit streak record as he went 1-3 in game 1 and singled in his 1st AB in game 2-- then scored on a Jed Lowrie double.
