Tim Duncan vs Kobe Bryant [in terms of accomplishments]

Post#1 » by crnulus » Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:28 pm

Would you rank kobe who was 1b for 3 chips and 1a for 2 over Tim who has 4 chips as 1a?

Well Duncan also has 3 FMVPs and 2 MVPs, and is/was consistently one of the best defensive players in the league.

Kobe had 2 Scoring titles, and was also one of the best defensive players in the past decade.

What do you say?

Kobe:

5× NBA Champion (2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010)
2× NBA Finals MVP (2009–2010)
NBA Most Valuable Player (2008)
12× NBA All-Star (1998, 2000–2010)
2× NBA scoring champion (2006–2007)
8× All-NBA First Team (2002–2004, 2006–2010)
2× All-NBA Second Team (2000–2001)
2× All-NBA Third Team (1999, 2005)
8× All-Defensive First Team (2000, 2003–2004, 2006–2010)
2× All-Defensive Second Team (2001–2002)
NBA All-Rookie Second Team (1997)
3× NBA All-Star Game MVP (2002, 2007, 2009)
NBA Slam Dunk Contest winner (1997)

Tim Duncan:

4× NBA Champion (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007)
3× NBA Finals MVP (1999, 2003, 2005)
2× NBA Most Valuable Player (2002–2003)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1998)
12× NBA All-Star (1998, 2000–2010)
9× All-NBA First Team (1998–2005, 2007)
3× All-NBA Second Team (2006, 2008–2009)
All-NBA Third Team (2010)
8× All-Defensive First Team (1999–2003, 2005, 2007–2008)

Duncan has had the better career. Kobe has had the more glorified one.

Why didn't you list all of their accomplishments?

Well, if you mean I prefer Duncan over Kobe, then yes. If you have a better argument for Kobe go ahead and explain?

Just added some more about Kobe. I don't think all of their accomplishments are really needed, but I'll still add it anyway.

You have to consider Tim Duncan's four years at Wake. Some of the best ACC basketball ever played by a big man.

You forgot Duncan's ROTY. Both of their all star game appearances, allstar game MVP's, all nba teams, all nba defensive teams.

It is clear you did this to show Duncan is better than Kobe by the way you worded your first post but at least be complete in your posts so it doesn't look so obvious.

You can pick who you want and I will take the one left over.

Duncan.

He was the best player on every championship team he was on.

Duncan has always had a crappier supporting cast. He makes his team-mates exponentially better. It's not a coincidence that San Antonio is famous for it's ability to draft "Diamond in the roughs". It's not FO genius, it's Duncan's ability to command the floor and lift his team-mates to higher levels of ball.

Kobe has yet to win a championship without the most talented big man in the league playing beside him. Until he does, I stand by my sentiment.

Duncan for me. Just having watched both play their whole careers, I'd still take Duncan without thinking very hard. Kobe is a great player, but he still has his flaws (prima donna, forcing shots, questionable leader). Duncan plays at a position where it is much harder to find an impact player, let alone a franchise leading type of player.

Duncan as of now. But if kobe plays a huge role in another championship winning team, its him.

right now duncan and shaq are ever so slightly ahead of kobe. They have 4 chips as the leader and best player of their teams. Kobe has 1 chip as a role player, 2 as a second option (he was behind the best first option of all-time) and 2 as the best player.

Yeah, lets ignore the fact that Tony Parker won Finals MVP in 07. I don't get how people can be so blind to this fact. When its Kobe, the argument is..."OH he had Shaq, he didn't really win anything." Without Kobe, does anyone really think those championships even happen?

Kobe might have him in terms of accomplishments if he wins another title. No matter what Kobe does the rest of his career (within reason) I think Duncan will be the greater player though. All his rings have come as the clear cut best player on his team, and he's one of the great defensive anchors of all time.

Duncan. He was the best player on all of his championship teams. Also has one more MVP.
