VDN Confirms - Sidney Green is New Big Man Coach

Postby Magilla_Gorilla on Wed Jul 15, 2009 8:15 am

VDN was on with the announcer for the Bulls summer league game and announced that the Bulls would be hiring Sidney Green as a the newest member of Del Negro's staff. Sidney will be acting as a big man coach, and will share duties with Randy Brown as a 'player development' guy.

I think this is great news. Its nice to see the Bulls rounding out the staff with some more development guys - coaches who will be working one on one with the players. Additionally its nice to finally see a big man coach again.

From Wiki:
Sidney Green (born January 4, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York) is a retired American basketball player and coach.

A 6'9" forward/center, Green was an All-American selection at UNLV before being selected by the Chicago Bulls in the first round (5th pick overall) of the 1983 NBA Draft. In his ten-year NBA career, he played for the Bulls, the Detroit Pistons, the New York Knicks, the Orlando Magic, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Charlotte Hornets. He retired in 1993 with 5,080 career points and 4,128 career rebounds.

Since retiring from the NBA, Green has been a coach at Long Island University, Florida Atlantic University, and now at North Florida. His son, Taurean Green, currently plays for the Chicago Bulls Summer League team.

Sounds good to me.

How many more coaches do we need to get in here to make Vinny entirely a figurehead? :D

It's definitely good . I do see some positives with VDN over Skiles. Skiles wanted to do everything himself and have total control while VDN is more with letting Asst do some of the work and overseeing everything

Hopefully we get him in here soon

So our staff is now Bernie(Lead Asst) Boby O and Myers Asst(working with defense) Sidney and Randy development guys with Sidney serving as the big man coach. It's nice to finally have a well rounded staff

And to begin with, he's going to see his son get cut.

That sucks.

Honestly these are the moves why we got rid of Skiles IMO. We needed a coach that would put a staff in place that can help and do the things that are needed. We've needed a big man coach for a while and a player like Brown to work with the players

My thinking as well. We still have a very young team, and I don't know why you wouldn't load up the staff with capable assistants to work with these guys everyday. As long as all of the coaches are on the same page and are guys Vinny can trust - I think this is fantastic.

The reason we didn't need a squad of coordinators with Skiles is that the man is a real coach. It shouldn't be counted against him that he didn't want to hire certain assistants when you consider that he squeezed more out of that paltry pool of talent than just about anyone could. If Skiles had real bigs you could gripe with him, but no, his best players were probably Antonio Davis (on the decline) and Othella Harrington (on the decline). Eddy Curry had his best seasons with Skiles. The only big man you could say he handled improperly was Chandler, although Tyson came back down to earth after one really good year.

Hmmm...Here is something I didn't expect to find. I knew Green had a decent journeyman career and had done some college coaching. What I DIDN'T know was that Sidney's most recent gig was working as a hospitality suck-up at The Wynn.

Full Story

LAS VEGAS -- In a very real sense, the future of the Knicks is here in Las Vegas this week at Summer League.

And if you look hard enough inside the team hotel -- inside the casino, in the restaurants, through the carpeted walkways where he moves so easily and has a smile and a wave for his co-workers -- you'll find a little piece of their past as well.

Say hello again to Sidney Green … son of Brooklyn, former Knicks muscleman and now domestic marketing host for the luxurious Wynn Las Vegas Hotel.

And that man you passed in the lobby the other day, the one that made you stop in your tracks and say, "Now, that face looks awfully familiar," is now sitting over lunch and explaining how it all happened -- how a bruising rebounder coached by the likes of Jerry Tarkanian, Chuck Daly and Rick Pitino now has one of the world's most recognizable business moguls for a boss.

"I think I was destined to be an executive host, thirty years ago when I first met Mr. (Steve) Wynn," says Green, now 47. "In my first year out here, 1979, when I came out here as a freshman (at UNLV), I met him. One thing he always told me was that when I decided to move back out here permanently, I will always have a home in his heart. That's when he owned the Golden Nugget. Thirty years later, here I am. He still remembered me, and it's an honor and a privilege."

Green's job used to involve battling the Barkleys and Rodmans of the world. Now it involves being all things to all those who walk through the Wynn's palatial doors.

"We tend to all our guests, particularly our high rollers," he says. "We establish a credit line for them here at the hotel, accommodate them with their needs, their rooms, food and beverage. Just to keep a smile on their face so they can enjoy themselves. The bottom line with this type of a job is to treat our guests the way you'd want to be treated when you go to a world class resort like ours."

That I don't know. I remember him vaguely as a player, kind of a high-energy rebounding/defender type, and not much of an offensive threat. So he must be more of a do as I say, not as I did sort of instructor.
Kevin Garnett is a **** ****.

Last job was a greeter? Was grabbing a guy from Walmart going to cost too much?

I am happy they finally got a coach for the bigs but thinking there had to be someone better. The lakers have Kareem and Orlando has Ewing, we got Sidney Green, oh goody.

He probably has some funny stories to tell about Antoine Walker.

Eddy's best year was under Bill Cartwright.

Scott Skiles can't be everywhere and with everyone - no matter how good of a coach he is. And Scott Skiles can't coach the big men while coaching the guards while working with the front office while working on the offensive and defensive game plans for the next weeks games.

Actually it was under Skiles. But Eddy became a better player because of Cartwright. Bill worked with both Tyson and Eddy a lot and really made them step up their game. Had it not been for Bill, Skiles wouldn't have gotten that kind of production out of both players, especially Eddy.
