Big TPE expires in a week

Postby basketbob on Tue Oct 27, 2009 10:49 pm

The $7.4 M TPE left from the Chauncey deal expires in a week. I haven't heard any rumblings that the Nugs will use it, but I thought I'd see if anybody has any great ideas.
This one's too expensive (like $40 M over two years, including the lux tax), but fun to think about:
Denver uses two TPEs to get MGasol and MJaric from Memphis.
Anybody else?

Similar deals could maybe net Galinari with Jefferies (leaving the Knicks with no players and a big pile of $$ next summer), or Hawes with Garcia (not useless, but that's a looooong contract).

Of the players making more than DEN's smaller TPEs and less than $7.4M who teams might be willing to let go for the savings, Ryan Gomes is the only one I've found who seems like he might be worth it.
And Love's injury might make MIN less willing to deal him this week. Am I missing somebody?

Honestly, I doubt that any of those deals would even be available. Sure those teams would like to dump those terrible contracts, but I can't see any of them including quality young players to do it. Especially when you're talking about **** teams like that, who have smaller payrolls. There isn't nearly as much desperation to cut salary(again at the expense of good young players).

The only deals I could see other teams doing that have them dumping a player for nothing more than the TPE, would be for the bad contracts - like those you mentioned - and nothing else. And as such has been the case, the Nuggets will not do that. That's why the TPE will most likely not be used.

If we were able to have it until the deadline, maybe something would come up where a team would be willing to dump a quality player for cap space....but I just don't see it happening at the start of the season like this. We do have a 3.7 mill TPE though, so there might be a chance we do something with that one. That's about it though, IMO.

Smitty is right, the big TPE is as good as expired imo. Don't the Nuggets have a couple of 3 + million TPE's (Atkins trade, and the Hunter trade)?

Throw in the 2010 1st rounder from the Knicks and you have a deal  I thought he was going to retire? What did he do come up with 6.5 million reasons not to?

^^^^If this doesn't work, he can just keep on losing where he is at.

I'm sure y'all are right, and the time of year is definitely a factor, but it does put into perspective how bad a move the Nugs' sale of their 2nd to Houston was on draft night when DeJuan Freakin Blair was available. I mean if you can't get Gasol by dumping $40 mil (OK, so the Griz only save $20 mil, and it's $10 M/yr as capspace), then $3M + 2nd rounder salary looks pretty reasonable for a ready to ball rebounding machine, even if he did get his knees at the same store as Leon Powe. Just had to go on record with that before Blair's bandwagon got too full. Dude averaged 37/17 per 40 min this preseason. Ouch!

Denver uses two TPEs to get MGasol and MJaric from Memphis.

If Memphis was crazy enough to offer this deal, Denver would have to jump on it.

But I am high on MGasol too. Gives the Nuggets the big body in the middle they've been lacking. Can slide Nene to PF, where he'll be able to destroy most other PF's in the league. Team will match up with the LAL much better. Jaric may not see any playing time, but if he does, he adds another three point shooter to the team. Only has 7 and 7.6 million left on his deal. I know it will be doubled, but I believe that team has a much higher chance of winning the title than this one would. And Stan does have the money.. he supposedly really wants to win, why not push the team over the edge? It isn't like the AI deal. This would be adding a piece that fits.

Memphis is not going to be trying move Gasol anytime soon, although I have heard some really good things about that haddidi they have on their roster, and he would probably be the low man on the totem pole after they drafted Thabeet this summer.

A couple of other guys I would not mind them bringing in as our 4th big and that may be available would be Tony Battie, Magliore, Elson, or Nick Collison. All of which are servicable as 4th big men, have 1 or two years remaining on their contracts, are veterans, and could play 20+ minutes a night in the case of injuries. I think any of them would also be an upgrade on Allen.

I started to put up a response about Battie last night myself, but stoppped because I know it will never happen, but he could be had for the tpe, he is in the last year of his deal, so it would still be an expiring contract.

Once in a while, I agree with you Nutty man.

Gasol would be great, he'd be instantly our starting center, KMart off the bench. If he sulks and moans, we can Mar-"bury" him on the bench. But I don't think, as easygoing (aka idiotic) as Chris Wallace is, they're ready to give him up.

Someone mentions Gallinari, I like that, he can really shoot, most people know that, but what they don't really get to see is he is a ball handler, can make plays for others (not necessarily for himself), he can do little things... he's a more complete player than Kleiza. What Kleiza got on him is probably running and physicality.

I just hope we use something, mostly because I'm bored... I hope we use it to get a legit big man who can play, who can box out consistently, who can catch passes without fumbling the ball, who wants the ball when the ball is shot.

Stan just needs to find out what Jerry Buss used to blackmail Wallace to get the Pau Gasol trade done, then use it to Denver's advantage.

Another possible name would be Kurt Thomas or Jeff Foster. Not as sexy, but would add needed depth.

I don't think the team needs much (then again, I'm an outsider looking in).

Maybe some depth, so how about Kurt Thomas and Charlie Bell from Milwaukee? Couple of veterans who can play when called upon. Total up their salaries and it's about the TPE.
