Why does Amundson get called so much for fouls?

Postby rebelx on Mon Nov 02, 2009 11:39 am

Every foul (well, not every one, but many of them) appear to not be fouls at all....and I'm just wondering what the reason he gets called for them so much?!?!?!?!

Its got to be one or more of the following:

-He gets into the air too much (leaves his feet too much)
-Refs don't expect a 6'9" white guy to have a 38 inch vertical
-He's a career role player, they don't get respect
-His reputation is a physical/hustle player, and he's getting calls based on reputation
-His frame...he's not big enough to hide his physical play with other forwards

Its gotta be something, because nearly every call just doesn't seem like it HAD to be called....many times its simply not a foul. I don't get it.

He tries to get blocks and that's where he picks up most of the fouls.

Taken from Tim Donaghy book.

Replace Bell, w/ Amundson.

Relationships between NBA players and referees were generally all over the board — love, hate, and everything in-between. Some players, even very good ones, were targeted by referees and the league because they were too talented for their own good. Raja Bell, formerly of the Phoenix Suns and now a member of the Charlotte Bobcats, was one of those players. A defensive specialist throughout his career, Bell had a reputation for being a "star stopper." His defensive skills were so razor sharp that he could shut down a superstar, or at least make him work for his points. Kobe Bryant was often frustrated by Bell's tenacity on defense. Let's face it, no one completely shuts down a player of Kobe's caliber, but Bell could frustrate Kobe, take him out of his game, and interrupt his rhythm.

You would think that the NBA would love a guy who plays such great defense. Think again! Star stoppers hurt the promotion of marquee players. Fans don't pay high prices to see players like Raja Bell — they pay to see superstars like Kobe Bryant score 40 points. Basketball purists like to see good defense, but the NBA wants the big names to score big points.

If a player of Kobe's stature collides with the likes of Raja Bell, the call will almost always go for Kobe and against Bell. As part of our ongoing training and game preparation, NBA referees regularly receive game-action video tape from the league office. Over the years, I have reviewed many recorded hours of video involving Raja Bell. The footage I analyzed usually illustrated fouls being called against Bell, rarely for him. The message was subtle but clear — call fouls against the star stopper because he's hurting the game.

His jumps are very exaggerated and he leaves his feet a lot = whistle happy refs

Last night one play completely embodied Lou Amundson is a nutshell. I mean one play stood out in my mind completely that just speaks to what he's all about in terms of hustle regardless of the situation.

End of the third quarter Twolves are trying to inbound the ball with 0.4 seconds left on the clock there's no way they get a good look off yet Lou tipps the ball deflects it out of bounds. Then the next time they try inbounding the ball he's jumping around like a kangaroo.

If I become GM of the Suns one day I will make sure I have a Lou Amundson clone on our team

If I was the GM Lou would be extended by now. God forbid we lose him next year.

His defensive fundamentals aren't very well developed. He has good anticipation and good leaping ability but he has to learn to stay on his feet longer in order to not bite on every single pump fake which draws him the most fouls.

On the plus side, he is very good at leaping straight up, and is rarely out of control and has saved himself a few times from picking up a foul because of this. With more and more playtime I think he will achieve more "solid" defense. Im optimistic.

Free throws are another story...

He's got a WEIRD looking outside shot. Not KMart or Matrix weird, but still pretty funny looking.
