Budinger doing well

Postby BVPN on Tue Nov 03, 2009 12:04 am

Good ol' Chase Budinger is doing pretty well for the rockets...shot 7-11 for them tonight for 17 points. I'm not suggesting that we should have picked him over Clark or anything, but I think he deserves a little more credit than he got on this board around the draft.

Wouldn't have minded him in the second round but the first was way to early.

If he had Lute for 3 years he'd be more developed, but good for C-Bud

The 1st round is too hype up on stars and not so much on 2nd fiddler or role player.

He's not a 1st option but can catch and shot and moves well without the ball.

We picked the right guy at 15. He's probably top 3 or top 5 in terms of potential. Budinger is a nice role player but has a limited ceiling.

I watched Chase play for three years down here in Tucson and Lute said he was the best recruit he's ever had. I don't think this is true but his potential was hardly tapped in college. He does have an NBA body (plus they'll beef him up) and I think he can move up to a second or third option in like three years. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this because I'm a wildcats fan. I would have been mortified if we'd taken him at 15 (seems like a move that the Suns FO would make). But I was praying we were gonna get him in the second round. Seriously, the rockets got a steal.

I disagree. The knock on Chase wasn't that he had a low ceiling, it was that he had a mediocre motor and was not aggressive at all. He just seemed incredibly soft. Kind of like Doris. The guy has loads of potential-- not quite as much as Clark, but more than many who were drafted ahead of him. If he can somehow dig deep down and find a tenacity he didn't display in college, the Rockets got an absolute steal.

Pippen one year was around Top 10 though.

I meant limited as in, not 15th pick potential. I like him as a player and I think he'll develop into a very good 3rd option but I think his ceiling is too low for a 15th pick. But I agree, Rockets got a steal.

Another player I wish we could have snagged in the 2nd rd. I think the suns do a poor job on draft night the past few years + decade. We have drafted some solid prospects, but were not willing to buy or trade up for 2nd rd picks.

I believe that is where scouts make or break there career, and were teams can tap certain potential talent. Guys that can rebound, shoot, have high IQ’s, but the potential might not be as high like a clark. Most of time, the potential does not pan out.

Budfinger actually has played well in the pre season too. He is getting mins, and I think he could have been a nice bench player for us. He is really athletic and can shoot, something this team needs, especially in a run-n-gun team.

Even if lute was there, I really dont think he would be that much better than he is now.

I watched the game and posted a mea culpa on the general nba thread - I was wrong about the kid. I still had the dopey Seattle/grunge band beard but he's a player. I love that whole Houston team, ever since the playoffs last year. They ended up with two guys I always wanted here, Ariza and Battier.
On a related note, hasn't HOU drafted exceedingly well the last few years?

also, the Rockets this year is a great situation for a player like Budinger - no-one expects anything of them, he'll gt good minutes with little pressure and he has great role models in Battier, Ariza and the other guys - all hard-working guys.
