san antonio trades:
tony parker
2010 1st
gregg popovich
portland trades:
brandon roy
2010 2nd
nate mcmillan
why for san antonio:
san antonio is getting old, and brandon roy is a top-ten player in this league. if you can trade less value for a player with as much value as roy, you have to seriously consider it. while playing roy would conflict with manu, based on age roy is worth much more to san antonio. manu still has a lot value for a contender, and can be subsequently traded to replenish depth in areas where san antonio would have holes (ideally point guard).
nate is an expiring contract. so if an aging tim duncan cannot guard speedy point guards, san antonio can easily replace him after the season ends.
why for portland:
clearly roy is the best player in this deal, and trading away a young franchise player is unheard of, but we knew one of roy or rudy would have to eventually be traded. this also opens up time for bayless to play at his natural position (undersized shooting guard) instead of falling into a damon stoudemire role. portland keeps their desired $7 million/year backup point guard, while making blake's expiring contract available for a future trade to land a more youthful backup power forward or shooting guard should bayless not prove to be ready. plus we're not talking about trading roy away for scraps - factoring age into his value, tony parker has proven himself to be a top 5 point guard in the league. plus trading roy for a premiere point guard not only opens up more shots for underutilized players such as greg oden, but increases the likelihood of better ball movement occurring. plus a dominant point guard-center duo makes more sense in most offenses than a dominant shooting guard-defensive center duo.
the 2nd round pick for a late 1st round pick would allow portland to stash another euro.
but the real reason to make the trade is to acquire gregg popovich. while playing defense and having more than three offensive plays may work against lower BBIQ blazer players like travis outlaw, even something as simple as keeping hot players in the game and removing cold players that are under performing could make huge strides towards improving the quality of play fans see from the blazers. but more important than that, nate mcmillan has been preaching how the blazers need more of a veteran presence to reach the next level. adding veteran players like miller and howard apparently are not enough, so adding a coach that has won multiple championships seems like a logical way to get that veteran presence.
