Meb Keflezighi won the 2009 NYC Marathon. Meb Keflezighi winning the 2009 NYC Marathon is the first American to pull off that achievement in over 25 years. In fact, with Meb Keflezighi winning the 2009 New York Marathon, he is the first American to win the race since back in 1982. The race has long become a competition where the American racers have taken a back seat to winners from Kenya, including Robert Cheruiyot who had won the Boston Marathon four times in his career. Now Meb Keflezighi is making name for himself when it comes to NYC Marathon history, as he goes down in the books with an impressive time.

The last American winner in the New York City Marathon was Alberto Salazar, who actually won the NYC Marathon for three straight years that included 1980, 1981, and 1982. Now Meb Keflezighi is taking the title of NYC Maratahon champion with a great time of just 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 15 seconds. During the race Meb Keflezighi wore USA on the front of his jersey, showing his pride for the country, and probably enamoring him with quite a few fans of the race that were watching and cheering as the American runner made his way towards the finish line. It was indeed a great day for Meb Keflezighi and the New York City Marathon, which served to show that Meb Keflezighi could be a force foa few more years to come.

I don't really give a damn about marathon running, but it's nice to see an American win the race.
Keflezighi managed to finish the race in 2 hours and 9 minutes. :o

I would be interested to hear from some of the running experts around here (Bill Bradley?) about whether this is going to be the first step in an American resurgence, or whether this is just an isolated case.

Ah. I missed all but the fourth quarter last night, so I guess I was out of the loop. Mods: lock this thread up if it's already old news.

Nah, it's not old news. Nobody really talked about it last night.

Congrats to the winner though. He pretty much ran a few minutes faster than my half-marathon time (meaning he more than doubly runs faster than me). I didn't get to sign up for this year's marathon but hopefully I get to run the NYC one within the next 2-3 years. I've only ran once, the national half-marathon in DC earlier this year.

Hey slick, where do you run/train? I'm a newbie runner who started running last week. I've done 4 runs so far (1.5m, 1.5m, 1.5m & 1.75m); all of them along the Jackson Heights 34th Ave. bike path. During the weekends (8 AM), it seems like a decent place to run, but during the weekdays, there's too many cars. I'm considering waking up a little earlier (7 AM) and running against traffic on 32nd Ave. I really wish there was a site like Central Park or the reservoir a few blocks away from me, lol. When I pick up my Amphipod Micropak and water bottle, I'll probably take the train to Central Park once or twice a week.

Meb Keflezighi -- is he from Indiana?

Winning a marathon is one of the most impressive accomplishments in all sports, so glad an American finally won

I live near Jackson Heights actually, and when I trained, I would just run early in the morning or late at night at the park in front of me. I would just circle it for however long. I figured 6-7 trips around would be a mile or so. But when I was still in school in the city, I would run in East River Park. It's nice over there. They have a track and if you want, you can run all the way to South Street Seaport and back. I haven't been running recently though but I do plan to get back into it. Finishing the half marathon was such a great feeling and I can only imagine it would be twice as fulfilling finishing the marathon and eventually, the Ironman challenge (if I do get there). I give props to anyone who runs them.

get the F train to roosevelt island.
running path right on the water. zero traffic, great air and sights.
the full loop of the island is 4 miles, but you can easily do shorter loops.

and sign up for the marathon. you won't regret it (well maybe a little bit the day after. :))
