Did We Make the RIGHT Carter Trade?

I know, I know, hindsight is 20/20. But a recent Orlando article got me thinking about the alternate possibilities we were presented in dealing away Vince Carter.

The article talked about how Magic GM Otis Smith wanted to hang onto Courtney Lee, and was willing to give Battie, Alston and Pietrus for Carter and Najera. That's right, we would have unloaded Eduardo's contract, AND gotten to keep Ryan Anderson. I don't know about you, but that version seems a LOT better than what we got. Courtney is obviously a talent, but I'm not sure if he can thrive with the increased defensive attention he's receiving. His role as a silent assassin worked to a T in Orlando, because they have so many other veteran, established weapons. Mickael's game is more suited to breaking his man down off the dribble, and he can still D it up. With Yi's bouts of listlessness and recent injury, I can't help but wonder how much of a beast Ryan could've been this year for us. With Rashard Lewis out, Anderson is torching every team that comes his way. Of course, he is also benefiting from decreased defensive attention paid to him, but he was doing the same thing last year for us, before his injury.

Enough reminiscing, I'd like to put this to a vote. Also, feel free to explain your POV, or just browbeat me back to the Trades and Transactions board with your moral authority and why I should never have made this thread.

I cant say I am down on lee yet.

I like what he brings to the table. I want to see him do his best Rip impersonation. Run around like a mad man and make the defense work. That is all Franks fault anyway. FRANK is a homer. CDR coming off the bench would be better for the team.

I say LEE put the mask back on. He must be off balanced.

Lee is not a #1 offensive option, hell at this point in time he's not even a #2, he's going to struggle big time without Devin playing and Brook manning the **** up.

The funny thing is that people are expecting VC's production from Lee. I dont see that and I never did. I see him more like Kittles then VC. That is what I want. I dont want what VC gave to this team. I want what Kittles did. Defense that creates turnovers and leads to fast breaks. I also want to see him move without the basketball and hit open shots off dribble penetration. Those are the things I want. Not what VC brought us because that didnt bring us anywhere.

no...not at all...if Ryan continues to produce how he is (though he was off vs Detroit)...the deal only gets worse...(still cant believe we threw in Ryan)

this is not a knock on Lee...I wont try to predict what type of player he could be, but if you think of him as a pure scorer, you're headed in the wrong direction...he does a lot of things well, has his whole career ahead of him and he can pave his way...still think he can improve his shooting, needs continue to play good defense and his aggressiveness needs to be above everyone else on the court...

Lee has a lot of potential...

there were a number of trades we could of looked at before last years traded deadline...I just dont think the Nets knew they were trading Vince at that juncture...and when we decided to trade Vince, the Magic said this was it, and there was nothing else better...the trade was a dump...(whether good or bad)

I like the trade we did. I think overall it comes down to do you like Lee or Ryan better and I would choose Lee. Ryan would not be putting up the numbers he is right now on our team. He's benifiting from Howard and Carter. Lee is the second option right now on this team and he's not able to carry that load. Ryan is a solid bench guy but will never be able to start on a championship team. Lee has the ability to be a good starter/shooter/defender. He's never gonna be a # 1 or 2 option but could be a good spot up shooter with the abilty to spread the floor. Dumping Najara would have been nice but it's not that big a deal. Once Lee can begin to blend in more the offense with a heathly Harris and Lopez then he's gonna excel. Our frontcourt is thin and injured right now that is why Ryan is getting all this fuss but we''ll fix that and Ryan will be forgotten.

That is what I am worried about. Having a lot of potential and Being around FRANK is like oil and water.

Its hard to gauge the answer to this one.

Considering the Nets' cap situation, I would have wanted to flip Pietrus elsewhere to maintain the cap space. If you could have turned him into expirings, that would have been my choice.
