What was worse?

Postby Gsraider on Wed Nov 04, 2009 10:15 am

Watching Philly play like crap again against a good team or having to listen to T. Heinson all game long again? The game itself was excruciating for obvious reasons, but Heinson has to be the worst announcer in the NBA. I used to believe that title belonged to C. Frazier, who feels the need to either make every sentence rhyme or to use words that you get the feeling, he doesn't know what they mean. I would listen to Clyde all day long over Heinson though. Heinson is like that annoying, drunk fan in a bar, who just rattles on about his team while displaying no objectivity, offering poor analysis of opposing player strengths and weaknesses, and then using pet names when talking about the Celtics. At one point when the Celtics turned the ball over, there was literally a loud, audible groan/sigh that lasted about 2-3 seconds. What a journalist!

It was bad enough when the Celtics weren't very good, but now it becomes doubly painful to watch the Sixers play the Celtics because the Celtics are not only better, but Heinson just makes the game almost impossible to listen to. I wonder if anyone other than Celtic fans can stand this guy.

I went to college in New England. Fortunately for me, it was when the Celts were more of a middle of the pack eastern conference team. I can only imagine him being 10X worse now that they are stacked with hall of famers. That said, it was flat out painful to listen to Heinson for that 4 year period. I swear, you'd think that not one Celtic has ever committed an honest foul throughout his tenure as Celtics broadcaster. He also has a knack for making the most absurd statements... I can recall him saying that Marcus Banks has the tools to put together an Iverson-like career in the NBA, and that Bruno Sundov had a Nowitski-like stroke that would keep him in the league for many years. Case in point, he's the most blatantly biased announcer I've ever heard in any sport, and you are among friends when it comes to Tommy Heinson loathing.

Just be thankful that you didn't have to witness the Walter McCarty era. Walter was better than any player that faced the Celts.... Shaq, Kobe, Iverson... didn't matter.... Heinson made a point to fill his air time by making sure everyone knew how strong his man love was for Walter McCarty.

Oh, and if I had to hear that fat loser scream, "Now, that's a TOMMY POINT!" one more time then I would've jumped off a bridge and slit my wrist on the way down.

That must have been an excrutiating 4 year period. Sadly however, I got to listen to the McCarty era because I'm probably older than most on this board and have had the NBA Ticket for a long time. While comical, I probably don't recall it being quite as annoying because like you said, the Celtics weren't very good when he was playing for them. I actually found him to be more annoying when Antoine Walker was with them. I simply couldn't take him referring to his pet as "Toine" after awhile. Oh, and you are spot on about him throwing a fit when the Celtics don't get a call or are actually called for one. It's doubly annoying when you realize that Pierce gets pretty much every call.

Oh, I was there for the 'Toine' era as well. Walker was one of those guys that you didn't need any help disliking, but still, Heinson was there to lend a hand.

And yes, every single call SHOULD go to the Celtics in Heisonland.

Zumoff is obviously a Sixer fan, but he doesn't let his personal interests cloud his professionalism, and he does a nice job of giving the opposition props when they are due. He also never gets ridiculously out of hand when describing Sixer players. He simply calls the games accurately and without bias while trying to provide excitement for those tuning in to support the local team. Not to mention, he does his homework when it comes to scouting reports and knowing the personnel of the opposing team. Heinson on the other hand, is just one of guys who thinks his HOF player status should relieve him of the researching and due diligence that all other broadcasters with a hint of professionalism put into their vocations, and thinks that his resume as a former player justifies him throwing out random statements no matter how wrong and illogical they may be.

Feeding off Gsraider's earlier post, if you had no idea who Tommy Heinson was, and you watched the Celtics for the first time you would honestly believe that some 'Broadcaster for a Day' contest was taking place at a local pub, and the loudest most obnoxious drunk in the bar happened to win.

I thought he was actually a little more bearable last night than usual; I still can't stand him, though.
