Had to take a 2nd look, but...

Erick Dampier, at 30 MPG is leading the league in BPG.

That may change tonight, but at 30 MPG, he is averaging 8.0 PPG, 9.5 RPG and 2.8 BPG.

In fact, our starting bigs (Dirk & Damp) are averaging 37.8 PPG, 19.3 RPG and 5.0 BPG

Remind me again the metrics to cancel the DUST and guarantee the contract? I know some all star, but there is time and stats as well as I recall. I hate to discourage him and his production.

Damp can't play more than 2,100 minutes this season, which is approximately 25.6 minutes per game if he plays all 82. If he keeps playing like this, let him average 30 MPG. Damp clearly only cares about contract years. He's averaged 74 games played a year by the way, so if he actually played 74 games, he could average 28 MPG and still not have his contract partially guaranteed

Therefore, he is on a pace to get to 2460 if he plays 82 games. Would the mavs f up their greatest off season asset ever for playing time and modest production to a very spare player? Granted, he is the second best mavs center ever (behind Donaldson). This issue was not broached in the off season, but could really mess up off season plans.

Maybe we need a watch on this situation. Retired Mod ready to take Sticky action

Once Howard and Gooden get healthy, I would expect to see more lineups with Dirk and Drew and center, so the minutes should take a fall, even though I am very happy with his production

If dampier produces and we win the west, f the dust chip. Common guys an asset on the court now is more valuable than a trade in the summer.

I agree. If Damp continues his current play he will be an all star this year. Damp is better than any trade we might recieve with the DUST chip. Hell, we couldn't even turn the "Buck shot " into anything. And if Damp plays better in contract years then the Mavs should just sign him to one year contracts until the end of his career.

Only the 70 games where he plays the most minutes count, so he actually has to average 30mpg to guarantee the contract.

1) Thanks to Branduil for clarifying the terms of the Damp contract to the posters on here. It's 30 MPG. Not anything lower than that.

2) The Buck Shot was a consequence of another trade that we made with a similar contract, the Stack chip. But that's besides the point, with Stackhouse, we got Marion, Humphries, and other players (not to mention got rid of garbage) PLUS another chance to try our luck via the Buck Shot. Buck Shot was smaller than the Stack chip so it probably wouldn't have resulted in anything. However, Damp chip is far greater than the Stack chip, so we'll probably get some player better than Marion + Humphries. How can you complain about that?

If Howard doesn't come back healthy the Mavs are in trouble. You can't compete with the top teams if you have Ross, Barea, and Terry as your SG's. The Mavs need a quality SG but I dont see one available (Redd always injured and expensive), (Hamilton too expensive and old). I like Mike Miller and think he would be perfect here but I dont see the Wiz giving him up for garbage. Azubuike would be decent, but he's not the answer. Dampier has been good this year. The Mavs would be in bad shape without him. Could be interesting around the trade deadline.
