can Dragic be our PG of the future

Postby Jimmy76 on Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:02 pm

Last year i saw next to nothing in the kid but this year he has shown a lot of potential and skill. I can actually see him being our future point guard if he keeps improving this much.

Thoughts on Dragic as our future PG?

This is going to sound stupid, but I've always kindof seen Dragic as our future PG. with confidence, there just isnt much of a glaring weakness.

he is a good shooter.

he has made a couple of Nash-esque passes lately; good playmaking ability

GREAT defender

his only real weaknesses are his over dribbling (not bad ballhandling, it just seems that way when he dribbles too much) and his FT shooting, which was good last year, and he was 2/2 tonight!

In his prime, or when evr he starts longterm (around 2012-15 ish), I could see him averaging 17-7-5-1.7-.5 (pts-ast-reb-st-blk). those aren't exactly all star numbers, bu they are fantastic starter numbers.

No I don't see him as our starting point guard of the future I see him as our future sixth man. I don't think leandro will be with the team in 4 or 5 years. That's the role I'd like to see Dragic in where he can play point and shooting guard. Really like what I've seen from him. Looks comfortable and not afraid to put up a shot and make a pass in traffic

If you think about how he did tonight with the given circumstances, I'd say yes. He scored 15 with 6 assists on an off night for everyone but Amare offensively against one of the best defensive teams in the league. All in his second year with jack squat for playing time. If he improves as much throughout the year and next summer as he did last year and last summer, oh yeah I think he could be. Phoenix has a history of incredible point guards

All-star stats last year would be... (points, assists, rebounds, steals, turnovers)

Tony Parker - 22/6.9/3.1/0.9/2.6

Chris Paul- 22.8/11/5.6/2.8/3

Mo Williams- 17.8/4.1/3.5/0.9/2.2

Allen Iverson- 17.4/4.9/3.1/1.6/2.5

Dragic's currently averaging (keep in mind he's only 4-11 on ft's) 7.8/3.6/1.6/0/1.4 in 15.5 minutes... average starter plays 35 so multiply it all by 3 and you have--

23.4/10.8/4.8/ still 0  /4.2

Not that it'd actually be that high, given it's 5 games. Take off like 4-5 points, 2-3 assists, add a steal and a half (he knows how to. 6 against Rubio in Europe over the summer) or so and you've got something like

18/8/4.8/1.5/4.2 plus good defense (and almost 40% carreer 3 point shooter, including the crappy Porter time)....... To me that looks better than BOTH the eastern conference All star point guards. If there was a third I forgot who it was. Better on assists than Tony Parker too... I see him logging 15-20 minutes a game by the end of this season or all of next season. When Nash retires in 3 years, he's gonna bust out. No 6th man crap! 1st man! 1ST MAN!!!

Sorry about the 3rd post, but I've got more ammo.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/s ... ayerId=592

Look at his stat like for his 2nd season. 9.1/3.4/2.1/0.8/1.3 in 20 minutes.... That looks awful similar to Dragic's but with 5 minutes more of playing time.

I'll change my mind if we see significant progress with Goran. He's definitely on the right track though and he's improved from last year without a doubt. I think we're one piece away from being contenders this year either in a dynamic 2 guard who can also defend (J rich to me isn't the answer) or a rebounding shot blocking 10 point per game scoring big man. I'd like to see Okafor on this team and I'd love to see Joe Johnson back here but realistically that probably won't happen. Or of course that dwayne wade guy wouldn't be too bad if we did a sign and trade type deal but those rarely happen for superstars.

I think we would all be pretty happy with Goran being our 6th man off the bench I see nothing wrong with that. If he puts up stats in increased playing time that lead to the notion he is worthy to take over for Steve once he leaves then I'm ok with having him be the point guard. Goran seems like he could be a solid complete player. His defense is a nice asset to have.

and to those who are interested I've decided to leave my options open. It's either GM or head coach for me in an ideal world.

and just to be sure nashrambler are you referring to wasting such a talent as losing barbosa? or having goran be the sixth man off the bench?

I defended my position about the Dragic intentions but if you're referring to Barbosa I will say this.

He's not a point guard and too small to be a 2 guard. I don't know if we will run in the future as much as we do now. His value decreases if we play a slower pace. I like Barbosa great team guy and can put up points I just like a more typical 2 guard in the role of a brandon roy/joe johnson type as the 2 guard for this team. It's something we've never had a dynamic 2 guard since really joe johnson was here and if you look at past teams that have won championships most of them have had that kind of player. It seems the winning formula is to have a sort of game manager esque type point guard followed by a dynamic 2 guard with a defensive lockdown 3 man who can also do other things well shoot the 3 rebound well etc have a really good power forward and then have a 5 man who can patrol the paint. I see no reason to deviate from that. Therefore I don't know if barbosa fits into our team's long term plans.

I could potentially see Dragic as that game manager type point guard one day

That would be 46.5 mins a game.

The correct PER36 is 21/10.

Please, please dont compare Tragic to Nash's second year. Not to be mean, but you make your self sound stupid. If you remember, KJ and Kidd was our pgs ahead of him. Also, we traded in that year and had sam cassell for a few games. That was one of the reasons why he wanted to be traded because he had two great PG ahead of him. I dont blame him either.

Do I think he can be a starter, I guess he can. But will he be in line with some of the great PG's we have had, hell no. He has potential, but really, he does not have it. He can start along side of a JJ or Roy. A guy who he can play off of. He is never going to be a similar type of QB like a nash, kidd, paul, jackson and so forth.

I do feel that if he is our future PG, this team is not going to be that good for years down the road.

haha... oops. Too late to be doing simple multiplication.

How come I can't compare him to Nash? Same kind of numbers in the same amount of minute behind and all-star point guard. How is that not the same situation, minus Dragic hasn't asked to be traded?

Dragic is going to be a solid player but I don't see him as a star. Would I like to see him starting over Nash? Sure but for the future with the Suns style of play and the famous PG's they had throughout the years, I'd actually like to see the Suns tank next year (they have their pick luckily) so they can draft Brandon Knight in 2011. He's going to be the real deal and would be sick in a Suns uni...
