Let's hear it for Jonas Jerebko

Postby Liqourish on Thu Nov 05, 2009 12:30 pm

Let's be honest. Jonas was the rookie we thought wouldn't see any playing time this year. And yet, he's become the best rookie on the team.

In two games, where he's gotten minutes, He's averaging 4 pts 4 rebs and 1.5 blks in 25.5 mpg.

Game 1- Orlando 0 pts (0-5 fg 0-2 3pt) 5 rebs 1 blk 26 minutes. Couldn't hit a shot, but did other things. Was really active defensively, kept possessions alive.

Game 2- Toronto 8 pts (3-3 fg 1-1 3pt 1-2 ft) 3 rebs 2 blks in 25 minutes. Didn't grab alot of boards, but kept alot of boards alive for his teammates. Played good defense. Got burned a few times by Bosh and got into foul trouble, but who doesn't.

He hasn't been bad at all. He's high energy, puts it all out on the floor, and will only get better with time. If he can knock down some shots and get a litte more strength in the post, I think he can be a very nice SF/PF off the bench for us.

I know it's the start of the seaosn and every rookie looks promising in the beginning, but Jonas is showing traits that don't decrease in time and won't be stripped of him with age. He looks like the player that has embraced Ben Wallaces' philosphy of going to work the most.

I am really liking what I'm seeing from him. I thought he'd see a lot of time in the D-League but it looks like that spot is for Summers this year. I never want to see Jerebko playing Center, but as a combo 3/4, he will be really good in time. NOT all-start caliber, but a really good role player.

Actually from what I saw in the preseason it was clear that Summers was the worst of the bunch.

Jerebko is a high energy guy who actually has some skill offensively too which isn't very common.

Im very pleased with him. He has a nice inside game and can hit the three as well. I love him crashing the boards. He is a matchup problem for 3's as well given his size.

The only problem right now is confidence, which is only to be expected. As soon as he learns to go up strong in the post, or to not pass up that shot, he is going to grow leaps and bounds

I think the guy should play some more 4. He's good in the pick and roll and would like to see him and Bynum work that a few times. Bynum's speed will draw defenders and he should be able to walk in for dunks.

He needs a full NBA off-season though. He needs to get stronger and quicker. He also needs to be less timid around the rim. He's put up some soft shots down there, and its why he didn't score in Orlando. Matt Barnes an I wanna say Bass made him look real bad.

All in all, pretty good for a 2nd round pick. I'll take it.

I hope to see him as our backup PF i am loving what i am seeing from him but i must disagree with you Liqourish, Daye showed he is our best rookie, he really had a huge impact against Orlando but couldn't keep it up. Jonas had a terrible start of game but later he was a lot better. They have both been a lot better than Wilcox and Maxiell.

Daye is obviously better then Jonas you fools.. but Jonas has made more of an impact so far in the season. That's where he's getting at.

And that's where i am disagreeing Jonas had more PT but Daye did something significant when he had time. I am pleased with both but Daye had more impact so far even if he played considerably less. That doesn't mean Jonas is garbage (i don't need to bash one player to praise the other, even if they are fighting for the same minutes  ) I think Jonas have been impressive and i am really happy.

Sure Daye has been more productive for the time that he's had, but the point is... he HASN'T had time. Jonas is obviously out battling him in practice to get that PT so as a result, Jonas is having more of an impact on the team.

Are we making just a little bit too much out of a rookie who has 2 starts and is averaging 4/4/1.5 in those starts??

Jonas likely is part of the regular rotation soon ahead of busts Wilcox and Max

This thread wasnt meant to suggest he is going to be the best. Almost everyone here thinks that Daye will probably be better in the long term. But right now Jonas has stepped up when we needed it and thats the point...jeez

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but Jonas was given a honorable mention in this weeks rookie rankings. With his awesome play of late it brings up two points:
1: Clearly ahead in the rotation ahead of Maxiell and Wilcox.
2: Makes sense if all the trade talk with Tay, that Jonas could fill his role.
