Let's talk about Rose - 4th qtr, defense?

Postby cool007 on Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:22 am

I think this will get unnoticed but this is actually a feel good stuff for the so far - this early for the young season but here it is.

Rose with 2 straight 10pt 4th qtrs. and did take over game - not all the way but was a BIG part of it. I just heard it on TNT that Rose scored 10 of his 14 points in the 4th qtr. While he also had 10 points in the comeback win over the bucks, in the 4th qtr as well.

He is slowly looking much better although not getting as many minutes as last year but he is getting there.

Also, Mo williams tonight sucked against Rose and I have noticed so much better defensive effort from him this year compared to last year. He is fighting through screens and know when to go under the screen and when to go above the screen and is contesting every shots. For the most part, he has been really good on defense as well.

I hated to see when Salmons kept the ball to himself in the final seconds tonight and didn't give it to Rose and I was hoping to see what Rose does in the final seconds with the ball in the clutch. The result was an ugly possession with a shot clock violation.

Here is hoping that we run plays for Rose at the end and let him decide whether to pass it or shoot it or take it to the hole and either get fouled or finish it.

I want to see if he can be our go to guy - not only for the last 5+ minutes but also in the final minute/seconds as well and see what he can do.

Rose is getting more comfortable maneuvering with the pick and roll (on offense) and Vinny is really starting to milk it. Especially vs turtles like Shaq or Z.

I said before I was comfortable in Rose being our go-to guy in clutch time, final 5 minutes. And the last two games have only confirmed this. I just don't think he is the guy we can rely on 48 minutes to carry our offense like LBJ or Kobe, because that not his M.O. So Kirk and Salmons better pick it up.

I'm seeing a bit more aggression out of Derrick on defense, but it seems to kind of mirror his intensity level on offense. Meaning earlier in the game when he is in coast mode more on offense, his D still seems shaky at those times, with little effort.

I definitely noticed that he was really trying to use his feet to stay in front of whoever he was defending in the 4th quarter. I've seen a bit more effort from him this year which means alot because he's always had the athleticism to play solid D. I think the experience will really start to improve his D near the end of this year and the beginning of next season.

To the bolded part:

This is why I think Rose would work just fine if we do sign Wade next summer as he has no problem deferring to other players (better be a star player than just a role player). Rose can just run the offense, get his when the opportunity presents itself, or whenever Wade is sitting on the bench and having Wade and Rose would really help at the end of games as both can break down the defense with ease.

If you mean the guy who scores 25+ a night, I agree with that.

He would rather defer, but there are going to be nights where everyone is cold and Derrick just needs to say, "F*ck it."

His D has been much better. And even with a bum ankle, that's encouraging.

I'm happier, though, with his penetration. I may have missed it a lot more last year, but that little floater in the lane seems to be dropping much more consistently. And that's more important than his shot, for now.

His defense is much better than last year. He helped to beat Cleveland. But what would happen without Kirks cut? Rose was on the bench at that time!!

We are talking in germany about Vinny. Why he's doing that....let Rose play! Is Kirk giving the ball back to Rose...no! Rose has to organize the game and not Kirk!

Speaking of Hinrich, I have been noticing a very BAD pattern when Rose and Hinrich play together. I have seen many many times this happen and it really bugs me. For example, last night Rose created a wide open shot for Hinrich and there was no one close to him, yet Hinrich instead of taking that WIDE OPEN three, he instead reset the offense - I was like WTF dude. If it was Gordon, he would have definitely shot it. Then after couple of possessions later, same thing. Rose created an open shot for Hinrich but instead of taking that shot, he passed it to someone else.

In short, if Hinrich is playing SG, he needs to take those open 3pt shots or even 2pt shots or he needs to play backup PG exclusively.

This happened last year too. I didn't like it then and I still don't.

This is one of the main reasons why Rose's assist numbers aren't higher. The other is that our main offesive set has the center at the top of the free throwline determining what to do with the ball. It's very frustrating.

i have been thinking the same exact thing since last year. Derrick the perfect unselfish PG to pair with a superstar like Wade.

We just need Chalmers and Beasley to FAIL down there in MIami and the stars will be aligned perfectly.
