Tommy said the Celtics are "elderly", is it a problem?

Postby Wolves2011 on Fri Nov 06, 2009 6:38 pm

During the broadcast on Wedn, against the wolves, Tommy said the Celtics had problems because of AGE and LEGS. Its still early in the season.

With luck, Doc will be able to give older players plenty of rest. But they had lots of rest in their blowout win on Tues also. I personally was surprised since it was early in the season, and they had an "easy" game on Tues that so many of Pierce, Ray, Wallace and KG's jumpers seemed to be "front rimming".

They are not playing many back to backs, but by the end of the season, they should be a more tired.

Concern anyone else?
Rondo is worth more than the $10 million he told Maxwell he would sign for. If we wait for free agency it will cost us more.

That's why Ainge's decisions this winter are so important - we've got some expiring contracts that could bring in fresh legs, and/or a future first-rounder- and you can't close the door on moving Ray Allen if the right trade comes along - even if it would wreck "ubuntu"

Not a problem in my eyes. Many of these players are older, yes. But players all over the league are working themselves into regular season shape still and we have had a rough schedule, regarding so many games in so little time thusfar. And having said all that, if we were 3-3 or something then I could see this as problematic, but we are 6-0. Not the time to worry right now.

Of course it will be a problem. Boston has to be very careful to not burn out the old guys in the season and be a step too late in the playoffs.
Thanks to those Republicans, now every week has a 7 day weekend.

Tonight we look slow getting to the perimeter on 3's and didn't have the legs to hit jumpers. Hitting the front rim again.

Its a lot of games in a short time, but the season has also just started. They shouldn't be tired in early November.

Huge problem. What I saw the past two games was tired legs. It will only get worse as the season goes on.

Yep; we're playing a very tough stretch to start the season.

Also, KG, our emotional leader and energizer bunny, is still playing himself into shape. He was winded 3 minutes into the game tonight.

That said, for the first time in the new Big 3 era this team has looked OLD the past two games. Maybe it's the stretch of games, but our energy was terrible in the first half tonight (except for a brief spurt to end the 2nd quarter). And maybe we've become OLD. That's the funny thing with age, one day you wake up and you're old.

What's worse, we're leaning on the 3 ball even when it's clear that we're tired and that we have the advantage inside. Sure, we have knock down shooters, but we shouldn't look for 3 at the expense of easier 2s. We should always look inside first, and then shoot 3s as the countermove if the inside gets shut down.

We're playing a soft brand of offense right now; nobody's getting to the line (KG was 13-20 with ZERO free throws), and it's all jumpers; on top of that we have old legs. I'd like to see us lean on Rondo and Perk on the nights when we're tired, using Rondo as the bridge to the 2nd unit, and being super conscious of getting Perk touches in the post. Rondo COULD have scored 30 tonight, and while it's his job to be the facilitator, he needs (and more specifically Doc needs) to realize that some nights we need Rondo to score first and make the defense stop THAT; and then facilitate once his scoring has garnered all the defensive attention.

As long as we are healthy going into the playoffs. I don't see it being an issue. Fortunately the NBA is so concerned with mapping out a primetime playoff tv schedule. That they tend to have a day off in between all the games. During the first round you get two games off on occasion too.

It's actually 7 games in 11 nights, with another one tomorrow.

At that rate, we would play all 82 games by just after the All-Star break, lol.

That would make any team tired.

This. Doesn't it end up being like 8 in 12 days? Egh. After that it's smooth sailing for a bit at least, iirc.

We are an old team. Pierce, Ray, KG, and Wallace are past their prime. If all these guys were 4-5 years younger, we would be unbeatable. IMO, the Lakers top 4 players(Kobe, Gasol, Artest, and Odom) are about 4-5 years younger than PGA, and Wallace.

That is why we need Rondo, Perkins, BBD, and Daniels to step up. As the season goes on, we will be better because BBD will be back to help. Daniels will be more comfortable in the system. KG will be back in game shape. Getting TA back will help too. I rather see an aggressive TA, than a scared Giddens out there.

And if they'd got their way this summer, they'd be older still: Grant Hill instead of Daniels.

IMO, Doc over-learned his lesson that you win with vets. It's going to take another lesson for him to swing back to a happy medium.
