The Major League Baseball regular season is over, well almost, as we prepare for the most magical month of all – October. The start of the postseason doesn’t only mean that we’ll be crowning a World Series champion in a month, it also means that free agency is just around the corner. Who, you might ask, will likely be this winter’s most covered free agent?
I’ll give you three guesses, but the first two don’t count.
Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez wrapped up his historic season with an RBI against the Orioles yesterday, raising his MLB-leading total to 156. Think about that. A-Rod notched an RBI in just about every game he played this season (158). As a Yankee fan there’s nothing I want more than for Alex to remain in the Bronx (okay, maybe a World Series title). There’s not much a fan can do regarding contract negotiations, but there is a petition Yankee fans can sign.
Visit KeepARod.com and add your name to the list if you’re adamant about seeing Alex go for another 50 home runs at Yankee Stadium next season. You’ll find my name on the list, as well as that of thousands of other Yankee fans. Even Red Sox fans should sign this petition. Why? Because you love to hate him, don’t you?
An NBA Swap: The NBA closed the month of September with a moderate trade between the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Hornets . The Hornets sent forward Cedric Simmons to Cavaliers in exchange for guard David Wesley. New Orleans is expected to waive Wesley, but the Cavaliers are excited about acquiring Simmons, the 15th pick from the 2006 draft. Cedric only played in 43 games for the Hornets last season, averaging just over 12 minutes a game. Simmons could end up playing a prominent role for the Cavs this season.
Jordan Traded: The L.A. Clippers have traded point guard Jared Jordan to the New York Knicks , without even having seen him wear a red, white and blue jersey. The Knicks added Jordan to their revamped guard corps in exchange for cash considerations. Los Angeles took last season’s NCAA assist leader with the 45th pick in June’s draft. Jared will compete for minutes behind Stephon Marbury once training camp opens. And no, he’s not Michael’s son.
Phillies Capture East: A lot of credit has to go to the Philadelphia Phillies for winning when it mattered most this season, but more will be said about the New York Mets’ epic collapse. The Phillies seemed done a little less than three weeks ago, when the Mets held an insurmountable lead in the NL East. On September 12th New York held a seven-game edge over Philadelphia with seventeen games left to play. The Phillies completed their comeback on Sunday beating the Nationals 6-1. Philadelphia was assured of the division title with the Mets’ 8-1 loss to the Marlins. What were you saying Mr. Randolph?
Arizona Wins NL West: The Diamondbacks’ game against the Rockies on Saturday was supposed to be important, but the Padres loss to the Brewers earlier in the afternoon sealed Arizona’s fate. The Diamondbacks are the 2007 NL West champions. All of the National League playoff matchups are yet to be determined though, because the Rockies’ win on Sunday forced a one-game playoff with the Padres for the Wild Card slot. Colorado will host San Diego tonight at 8:37 EST to fight for the right to play the Phillies in the NLDS. The aforementioned Diamondbacks will battle the Chicago Cubs in the other NLDS series.
Favre Sets Record: Brett Favre moved into sole-possession of the NFL’s all-time touchdown pass record, surpassing Dan Marino in the first quarter on Sunday. Favre connected with Greg Jennings for No. 421, than added to his record in the fourth quarter on a pass to James Jones. More importantly, the Packers beat the Vikings 23-16 to improve to 4-0 (Dallas is the only other undefeated NFC team). I give Brett an enormous amount of credit because he’s remained humble this season. The first thing on his mind is always getting wins, not adding his name to the record books.
Rookie Beats Jets: The New York Jets should have won this game. Heck, they probably even figured they were going to win this game. They were taking on the Buffalo Bills and rookie quarterback Trent Edwards, no problem right? Wrong. Buffalo prevailed 17-14 over the shell-shocked Jets. The Bills defense intercepted Chad Pennington twice, allowing their inconsistent offense to remain in the game. Buffalo improved to 1-3, dropping New York to 1-3 in the process. This division is so bad that the Patriots might clinch the division before Halloween.
