Gotta love these Indians. Well, when they’re not playing the Yankees. Cleveland ran roughshod over the Red Sox last night, en route to a 3-1 ALCS' lead. The Indians won on the strength of a seven-run fifth inning, during which they touched up Tim Wakefield and Manny Delcarmen. Jhonny Peralta and Casey Blake each cranked a home run in the fifth, as the Indians batted a round.
One more Cleveland win and the Sox will join the Yankees on the golf course. Hallelujah.
Movin’ On Up: This seems to be the theme heading into the start of the regular season. Minnesota’s Al Jefferson is looking for a lucrative contract extension from his new team, just as Ben Gordon and Luol Deng are in Chicago. The Timberwolves are prepared to negotiate with Jefferson after the season if the Halloween deadline comes and goes, but Al’s price might be a lot higher after he gets the run of the roost in Minnesota. Kevin McHale would be smart to lock Big Al up now, but he’s never one to go by the book.
Another Big Al: Al Harrington, Golden State’s Big Al, might get some run as a sixth man for the Warriors this season. Don Nelson says that he’s planning on shuffling his lineup in order to maximize the return in Golden State this season. Nelson repeatedly called Harrington his ‘best player’ during training camp, but there’s a chance he could be coming off the bench during the early part of the new season. Don called it, “the perfect position for him.” The reason Al was traded to Atlanta from Indiana a few seasons ago was because he didn’t want to sit on the bench during the opening tip. I’m not entirely sure Harrington would be happy as a sixth man again, but I’ve been wrong before.
Rockies Are Wild: The Colorado Rockies, who squeaked by the Padres for the National League Wild Card just a short while ago, are now gearing up to represent the NL in the 2007 World Series. The Rockies have won all seven of their playoff games, after sweeping both the Phillies and Diamondbacks. Colorado might be the hottest team in all of sports right now, with the New England Patriots a close second. Whether the Rockies play the Cleveland Indians or the Boston Red Sox next week, they shouldn’t be considered an underdog. Inexperience doesn’t seem to matter when it comes to Colorado or Cleveland. I assume that quite a bit of Coors has been consumed in recent weeks.
Pinella Content: Cubs skipper Lou Pinella is content in Chicago and maintains that the Windy City will be his final managerial stop. It doesn’t seem to matter that there might be a vacant position with the New York Yankees, even though rumors swirled that Sweet Lou craved the job last winter. It now seems as though Joe Torre might have more job security than initially thought, but names will continue to be mentioned nonetheless. It was originally reported that Yankees’ brass would come to a conclusion regarding Torre by Wednesday morning, but I’m still waiting with bated breath.
Chambers A Charger: The San Diego Chargers have acquired former Miami Dolphins' wide receiver Chris Chambers, the team announced Tuesday afternoon. It is being reported that the Chargers sent Miami a second-round pick in exchange for the wide out, who has had a disappointing season. Chris has 31 catches for 415 yards in 2007, but has yet to reach the end zone. I think San Diego is a perfect fit for Chambers, with Philip Rivers and the offense finally coming around. Malcolm Floyd and Vincent Jackson haven’t had the breakout seasons Norv Turner thought they would, but Chambers could help rectify the situation.
A Chief Trade: With a possible excess of running backs stockpiling on their roster, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade Michael Bennett to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday. It was unclear as to what the Chiefs received in return late Monday night, but I’d assume something like a mid-round draft pick. Tampa’s running game has been decimated by the loss of both Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman to injuries early this season. The arrival of Bennett should help Jeff Garcia and the offense get things going once again, while Kansas City isn’t likely to miss him too much. Rumor is we could see Priest Holmes this weekend.
