The end of the regular season is almost upon us, so now is an opportune time to examine which players were overpaid the most in 2007-2008.
Kevin Garnett has a -35 Reina Value, but he is also a fringe MVP candidate and also the highest paid player in the game and clearly does not qualify for a list like this. Neither do players who missed significant portions of the season due to injury.
Christopher Reina is the executive editor of RealGM and the creator of Click here to view the current RealGM Player Ranking Data.
(Season FIC rank, FIC per 40, Reina Value)
- Rashard Lewis (44th, 12.3, -24%)
The maximum six-year, $110 million+ contract Lewis signed in July raised many eyebrows on how the Magic would manage to get even a decent return on their investment, but the Magic will happily take his 40.9 3PT% and his 5.4 RPG.
- Michael Redd (53rd, 13.3, -31%)
Redd and the Bucks have been disappointingly mediocre this season. In losses, he has shot 33.0% from 3-point territory compared to 45.6% in wins.
- Mehmet Okur (90th, 12.6, -25%)
The good health of Carlos Boozer has resulted in a drop for Okur's production, but he is still shooting 43.8% from the field, down from five consecutive seasons of 46%.
- Ben Wallace (91st, 12.9, -57%)
Wallace's minutes have declined and so has his rebound rate, down to 15.2 this season (he had a rate of 19.0 or better during his final three Detroit seasons). His $15.5 million albatross of a contract paved the way for him to get dealt by Chicago for their own bloated contract that appears later on this list.
- Peja Stojakovic (92, 11.0, -43%)
Because of the good fortune of being healthy, Stojakovic qualifies for this list. His $11.6 million contract is troublesome, but the Hornets are only paying Chris Paul $3.6 million and the sharpshooter is shooting a career best 45% from 3-point territory.
- Kenyon Martin (96th, 12.9, -51%)
Like Peja, K-Mart's season can easily be categorized as a success since he has managed to stay healthy for the vast majority of the 07-08 season. Martin is actually averaging more minutes per game than in 05-06 and has averaged 12.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while helping cushion the loss of Nene.
- Al Harrington (73rd, 12.9, -24%)
Harrington's minutes increase or decrease depending on the match-up for the Warriors, but he decidedly is not asked to carry that heavy load he did in Atlanta when he averaged 18.6 points a night.
- Kirk Hinrich (98th, 11.7, -43%)
Hinrich's new contract kicked in this season, and it coincided with the most frustrating campaign of his career. His FG% dropped from 44.8 to 41.6 as those jump-shots aren't falling as easily for the $11.25 million man.
- Boris Diaw (101st, 11.6, -30%)
Diaw's production across the board (as expected) has increased since Shawn ?Marion was dealt to Miami. He is being paid the salary his 05-06 Amare-less season dictated, and his RV should improve in a full Matrix-less season next year.
- Erick Dampier (115th, 14.6, -45%)
Dampier has had a productive season, shooting a career high 64.5% from the field while blocking 1.6 shots per game, his best total in Dallas.
- Kurt Thomas (120th, 15.1, -30%)
Thomas is in the final season of a contract that the Knicks, Suns, Sonics and now Spurs have played hot potato with.
- Cuttino Mobley (121st, 8.7, -33%)
Mobley has two more expensive seasons left on his current contract on a Clippers' team that desperately needs to get younger/more talented.
- Jason Williams (138th 10.7, -44%)
Williams will be a free agent this summer, and the team that signs him will surely pay less than the $8.9 million he is making this year.
- Andres Nocioni (140th, 10.3, -43%)
Nocioni was a free agent last summer and after a nice start to the season is looking like the most overpaid member of the class. His FG% dropped from 46.8 a year ago to 43.1 this season while he's also seen his rebound rate drop from 12.2 to 9.6.
- Darko Milicic (164th, 10.6, -38%)
Milicic, another member of the 07 free agent class, has shot 43.5% from the field in just 24.5 minutes per game.
- Rasho Nesterovic (172nd, 13.1, -52%)
Nesterovic has played well of late and about as well as anyone can expect from the center at this point in his career.
- Wally Szczerbiak (173rd, 10.3, -69%)
Szczerbiak is in the middle of his healthiest season since leaving Minnesota. His 43% shooting from 3-point territory is his best since he was an All-Star in 2002. He has one more season of being paid All-Star money.
- Larry Hughes (175th, 8.8, -70%)
Watching Hughes play, it is hard to believe that he is the same guy who averaged 22.1/6.3/4.7 during his final season in Washington. To give Danny Ferry credit, the expensive signing looked good in theory, but he and LeBron James never properly meshed.
- Kyle Korver (185th, 9.5, -27%)
Korver has played well in Utah, but he has seen his minutes dramatically reduced.
- Eddy Curry (188th, 9.5, -63%)
Curry's minutes dropped by nearly ten minutes per game this season as the double low-post frontcourt hasn't worked out whatsoever.
- Marquis Daniels (196th, 10.1, -51%)
Daniels has finally managed to stay healthy, but he still isn't nearly as productive as he was in Dallas.
- Matt Carroll (200th, 7.7, -44%)
Many kudos to Paul Nadel for signing the former D-Leaguer to a $27 million contract last summer.
- Vladimir Radmanovic (201st, 10.7, -47%)
The Lakers really should have tried to void his contract after his snowboarding injury.
- Quentin Richardson (202nd, 7.7, -63%)
The Kurt Thomas trade seems so long ago, and it was one of the moves you point to as why the Isiah Thomas-era didn't work.
- Andrea Bargnani (204th, 7.8, -38%)
It is extremely uncommon (unless your initials are K.B. or you miss the entire season like Greg Oden) to see such a bad value coming from a #1 overall player on a rookie scale contract, but it has been one of those seasons for Bargnani.
