The 2008 NFL season kicks off tonight as the defending-champion Giants face off against the division-rival Redskins.

I’ll take the champs in this one.

Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were caught with marijuana in their hotel room and were dismissed from the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program on Wednesday morning. They will also be suspended to begin their NBA careers, not exactly an auspicious opening.

Ben Gordon is reportedly in talks with CSKA Moscow about a one-year contract, which would make him the biggest name to jump overseas yet. If Gordon does decide to do this, which I ultimately don’t think he will, David Stern and the NBA might start to worry.

The Grizzlies hope to win with youth this season, having added guys like O.J. Mayo, the aforementioned Arthur, and even Marc Gasol. Regardless, the playoffs won’t be an option for Memphis in 2010.

Carmelo Anthony isn’t thinking about basketball just four weeks from the start of training camp for the Nuggets. Perhaps ‘Melo has become a bit burnt out by his schedule over the last few summers, which is something Denver should certainly worry about.

Clyde Drexler will present Hakeem Olajuwon for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday, something ‘The Dream’ asked ‘The Glide’ to do. As a twenty-something, it’s strange to see some of my childhood idols getting inducted in Springfield.

Brian Cashman plans on putting Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen to start the 2009 season next spring. I wouldn’t be against such a move if the Yankees had a solid stable of arms in the rotation, but at this point in time that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The Rays activated reliever Troy Percival prior to the start of their series against the Yankees on Tuesday. Tampa Bay still has a slim lead over Boston for first place in the AL East, and they’d need Percival to be on his game in order to hold on down the stretch.

The Steinbrenner brothers reportedly want Brian Cashman back as their general manager next season. I honestly don’t think the blame for New York’s struggles this season can be placed on anyone, with a myriad of injuries disrupting their plans for 2008.

The injury woes of Carlos Zambrano appear to get worse by the day when he saw the Cubs’ team doctor on Wednesday after leaving a start against the Astros early on Tuesday night. I think Chicago will hold onto the lead in the NL Central, but advancing in the playoffs could become a problem.

Kyle Boller’s season is over as the Ravens have placed him on the injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Baltimore doesn’t have depth at quarterback, but perhaps this will be good for both Boller and the Ravens. He looks like he needs a fresh start elsewhere.

Football Meteorology For Week One, by Jeff Risdon.

Brett Favre has been named one of the Jets’ captains after a vote took place in New York on Wednesday. Even though Favre has been with the team for less than a month, I’d imagine it would be pretty hard not to vote for a legend like #4.

Go Slow With Flacco, by Randolph Charlotin.

New Lions' running back Rudi Johnson has accused former Lions' runner Tatum Bell of stealing his luggage earlier this week. Bell claims it was all a misunderstanding, but I can see why this story appears to carry some weight. Rudi stole Tatum’s job!

Shawne Merriman will be an in-studio analyst for FSN’s Pro Football Preview, which marks the first time that a current player has served as a full-time analyst. The taping will be done on Thursdays, and maybe Merriman should stick to television for the 2008 season.

Colts’ 2008 Should Be A Wild One, by Anthony Holds.

Joe Sakic claims that he may have retired this offseason had the Avalanche pressured him to make a decision about his future. Sakic even referenced how the Packers handled Brett Favre this summer. I wonder if the Green Bay saga is going to change the way teams handle aging players in the future. Eh, probably not.
