Certainly by now most of you are already familiar with my Floor Impact Counter and Reina Value. (Please click here to familiarize yourself with the systems.)
I also use the FIC to calculate team totals, both by game and for the season.
In order to determine my team rankings, I have calculated the difference between a team's own FIC per game and their opponents' FIC for the entire season.
The number in parenthesis is the difference between their FIC differential so far this season and their differential from last season, which clearly goes a long way in determining how significantly a team has improved or declined.
• RealGM calculates the Floor Impact Counter using the following formula: (Points + .75 Defensive Rebounds + Offensive Rebounds + Steals + Assists + Blocks - .75 Field Goal Attempts - .375 Free Throw Attempts - Turnovers - .5 Personal Fouls)
Team: 08-09 FIC Differential (Improvement from 07-08)
1. L.A. Lakers : 23.8 (9.4)
The Lakers have been so excellent, especially on defense, that it has gone mostly unnoticed that Kobe Bryant's production has slipped slightly through the first few games of the season.
2. Cleveland Cavaliers : 17.8 (17.2)
The Cavaliers lead the NBA in points per 100 possessions with 109.9. Last season they were 19th in the NBA.
3. Orlando Magic : 14.4 (7.4)
Dwight Howard leads all players in FIC40 in our player rankings.
4. Boston Celtics : 12.2 (-7.5)
Slow starts have been largely to blame for Boston's two losses against Indiana and Denver, but coming out of an eight-game, 12-day stretch with a 7-1 record is clearly acceptable.
5. Utah Jazz : 11.4 (-4.7)
With Mehmet Okur attending to his ill father, Kosta Koufos has averaged eight points, six rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game while gaining the confidence of Jerry Sloan.
6. Phoenix Suns : 9.6 (-6.6)
The Suns have dropped all the way down to 17th in pace.
7. Miami Heat 8.4 (23.9)
Dwyane Wade is receiving texts from Pat Riley that he is the best player in the world, and he has quite easily been the best shooting guard, with his 22.4 FIC40 pacing him well ahead of Joe Johnson (16.5), Vince Carter (14.9), and even Kobe Bryant (15.0)
8. Detroit Pistons 7.9 (-7.9)
Even though it's early, Allen Iverson's ability to get into the lane to score has moved the Pistons away from being a jump-shooting team, but a resurgence from Rasheed Wallace (18th in season FIC) must also be cited.
9. Atlanta Hawks : 5.8 (6.9)
The main difference between Atlanta's 6-0 start and 3-0 record since has been the intensity on the defensive end. They managed to escape Chicago with a win despite yielding 108 points and giving up 103, 115, and 119 points in the three subsequent games. They had given up just 85.8 points per game in their first five.
10. Chicago Bulls : 5.7 (10.3)
With Ben Gordon surging playing beside Derrick Rose, Luol Deng (9.9 FIC40) has yet to find his game, shooting just 39.3% from the floor in November, including that 0-for-8 night at Orlando.
11. Indiana Pacers : 5.6 (9.4)
The Pacers have won each game in which they won the turnover differential battle and have lost the five games they didn't.
12. New Orleans Hornets : 4.2 (-4.9)
The Hornets were 7-2 at this point last season compared to their current record of 5-4, which includes narrow victories over the Warriors and Blazers, but their upcoming stretch of four games includes a home-and-home against the Thunder, book-ended by games against the Kings and Clippers.
13. Philadelphia 76ers : 3.7 (3.2)
The Sixers have been outrebounding their opponents by a differential of 8.2 per game. Reggie Evans, Samuel Dalembert, Marreese Speights, and Elton Brand are all averaging more than 14 boards per 48 minutes while Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, and Andre Miller are averaging better than 5.0.
14. Toronto Raptors : 3.6 (-2.1)
Jermaine O'Neal has never been a highly efficient scoring big, and the 40.4% he's currently posting is easily a career low.
15. Portland TrailBlazers: 2.0 (2.9)
Greg Oden had 13 points, eight boards, and three blocks in Minnesota on Saturday on the second night of two straight road games. The in-fighting between Jerryd Bayless and Sergio Rodriguez has to be at least in part a spill out of Rodriguez getting the backup point minutes and Bayless not seeing the floor since the third game of the season.
16. Denver Nuggets : 2.0 (-5.9)
Chauncey Billups was named the Western Conference Player of the Week as he averaged 21.5 and 5.8 while leading the Nuggets to a 3-1 record. He also wants to eventually become Denver's GM.
17. Dallas Mavericks : 0.3 (-9.0)
The Mavericks have a very obvious problem scoring efficiently when Gerald Green (46.4%) is their most accurate shooter, averaging at least six points per game.
18. Houston Rockets : -0.5 (-11.3)
The Rockets have been plagued by inconsistency and alternating wins and losses in consecutive games dating back to the overtime loss at Portland. “We’re just in the early stages of trying to figure everything out," Tracy McGrady told the Houston Chronicle. "It’s just chemistry on the basketball court. We’re trying to feel each other out. I think we’re deferring to guys too much, and I’m partially to blame. What we want to do is build something.”
19. Golden State Warriors : -4.7 (-4.9)
The Warriors hold a long history of great rebounders, but none of it recently. Wilt Chamberlain and Nate Thurmond hold positions 1-5 and 6-10 respectively in season rebounds per game totals for the Warriors, so Andris Biedrins won't be able to touch either one of them even if he continues to lead the league in rebounding (14.9), but he's at least firmly entrenched in the Larry Smith territory.
20. Milwaukee Bucks : -5.6 (6.8)
Two of the Bucks' four top scorers are Ramon Sessions and Luc Mbah a Moute, both of whom were second round picks in each of the past two seasons.
21. New York Knicks : -6.1 (10.7)
Wilson Chandler is averaging 16.5 points per Knicks' win and 9.8 points in their losses.
22. New Jersey Nets : -7.7 (-1.6)
Vince Carter and Devin Harris are each averaging better than 23 points per game while Keyon Dooling is the only other member of the club to average double-figures slthough Yi Jianlian, Ryan Anderson, Jarvis Hayes, and Josh Boone are all averaging better than 8.0.
23. San Antonio Spurs : -7.9 (-16.7)
If the Stephon Marbury interest is mutual, the Spurs must hope that the end of that marriage ends quickly while Tony Parker is still unavailable.
24. Minnesota Timberwolves : -8.1 (8.9)
Kevin Love had a 14 and 9 night, followed by a 20 and 8, but has since scored just 20 points in 93 minutes on 29% shooting.
25. Memphis Grizzlies : -9.3 (6.4)
O.J. Mayo is thus far justifying being a high volume shooter, as he's making 45.1% of his 17.5 shot attempts from the floor and 39.6% of his 5.3 3-point attempts.
26. Sacramento Kings : -10.9 (-2.5)
A reality show centered on the Kings sounds a lot like 'Hard Knocks', the NBA version.
27. Charlotte Bobcats : -11.4 (-2.9)
As much as I want to know how Dwight Howard could possibly play 26 minutes without scoring a single bucket, I would rather know how the Bobcats can find a way to lose such a game.
28. Washington Wizards : -20.8 (-17.6)
Nick Young has filled in for the Gilbert Arenas scoring void by averaging 15.1 points per game off the bench, shooting 49.4% from the floor.
29. Oklahoma City Thunder: -24.4 (-8.2)
The Thunder are averaging just 1.04 points per shot with their top-five scorers all shooting 43% or worse.
30. L.A. Clippers : -27.6 (-16.0)
The Clippers, who gave up 37 points to undrafted rookie Anthony Morrow, have been outscored by 13.9 points per game. |
