By Christopher Reina

Certainly by now most of you are already familiar with my Floor Impact Counter and Reina Value. (Please click here to familiarize yourself with the systems.)

I also use the FIC to calculate team totals, both by game and for the season.

In order to determine my team rankings, I have calculated the difference between a team's own FIC per game and their opponents' FIC for the entire season.

Team: 08-09 FIC Differential (difference from 07-08, rank)

1. Cleveland Cavaliers : 21.6 (+21.0, 1st)

The Cavaliers are already 11 wins shy of their 2007-08 total of 45.

2. Boston Celtics : 20.6 (+0.9, 13th)

The Celtics are slightly better than they were last season because of an improvement defensively.

3. L.A. Lakers : 14.9 (+0.5, 14th)

The Lakers are a full point better per 100 offensive possessions than they were last season.

4. Orlando Magic : 14.4 (+7.4, 6th)

Jameer Nelson is shooting 50.3% from the field and 44.5% from beyond the arc while decreasing his turnover rate.

5. Utah Jazz : 10.8 (-5.3, 23rd)

Utah has had some serious struggles on the defensive glass, which, of course, are atypical for the club.

6. Portland Trail Blazers : 8.7 (+9.6, 4th)

The improvement made on the glass, particularly the offensive glass where they rebound as well as anyone, has been huge for Portland, a team that still largely relies on the jumper.

7. Denver Nuggets : 8.1 (+0.2, 15th)

The Nuggets were 11th in points per 100 possessions last season and have moved up to sixth this year.

8. New Orleans Hornets : 6.5 (-2.6, 20th)

No player has made a bigger difference being on the floor versus off than Chris Paul this season. According to 82games.com, his net points on/off per 100 possessions is +24.6.

9. San Antonio Spurs : 5.9 (-2.9, 21st)

While still monsters on the defensive glass, San Antonio has rarely been able to be quick enough to give themselves second chance looks off their own misses.

10. Dallas Mavericks : 4.6 (-4.7, 22nd)

The initial success on defense has eroded away to just below the league average in points allowed per 100 possessions.

11. Houston Rockets : 3.0 (-7.7, 24th)

With Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, and Ron Artest all showing significant signs of wear and tear, it is thanks to the play of guys like Carl Landry, Luis Scola, and Von Wafer as to why the Rockets are still a playoff team.

12. Phoenix Suns : 3.0 (-13.2, 29th)

The Suns went 3-3 on their six-game road trip by beating Toronto in the opener and then Atlanta and Washington on back-to-back nights at the end.

Phoenix is 9-5 when Shaquille O'Neal is the club's leading scorer and 11-8 when it is Amare Stoudemire.

13. Atlanta Hawks : 2.8 (+3.9, 10th)

Playoff teams don't usually go almost 14 minutes without a field goal.

14. Detroit Pistons : 1.8 (-13.9, 30th)

No team has regressed like the Pistons, and it is hard to believe that they were at one point 4-0.

15. Miami Heat : 1.7 (+17.2, 2nd)

This improvement by Miami has come with contributions from Michael Beasley or Shawn Marion that have been far below expectations.

16. Philadelphia 76ers : 1.5 (+1.0, 12th)

Andre Iguodala has easily been Philadelphia's best player and although his scoring is down, he has been more efficient with the said scoring, and his play on the glass has been much better.

17. Milwaukee Bucks : -1.3 (+11.2, 3rd)

The Bucks are last in FG% allowed with a mark of 52.4%, which clearly falls in the face of the Scott Skiles' conventional wisdom.

18. Toronto Raptors : -3.0 (-8.8, 25th)

The Raptors have been playing much better of late, and it is far too early to write off 08-09, let alone Chris Bosh's future beyond 09-10.

19. Charlotte Bobcats : -3.7 (+4.7, 8th)

At this point I would be surprised if Larry Brown doesn't will the Bobcats into the postseason, especially if Emeka Okafor continues his much improved play.

20. Indiana Pacers : -3.8 (+0.0, 16th)

The Pacers are 5-5 since getting Mike Dunleavy back but are 4-2 over their past four.

21. Chicago Bulls : -6.2 (-1.6, 17th)

The Bulls are 4-1 when Tyrus Thomas plays at least 35 minutes.

22. New Jersey Nets : -8.2 (-2.2, 18th)

The Nets have been scoring more efficiently this season than they did during their Finals' appearances, but they were predicated on excellent defense in those days, which is clearly not the case this season.

23. Minnesota Timberwolves : -8.7 (+8.4, 5th)

Minnesota has made huge improvements from last season largely thanks to the incredible rebounding of Kevin Love.

24. Golden State Warriors : -9.3 (-9.5, 26th)

The Warriors lead the NBA in blocked shots, thanks in large part to Ronny Turiaf and Andris Biedrins, but also to the active hands of Anthony Randolph, Brandan Wright, and Kelenna Azubuike.

25. New York Knicks : -10.9 (+5.8, 7th)

The Knicks have had a tangible improvement this season, and Chris Duhon should be a definite candidate for Most Improved Player.

26. Oklahoma City Thunder: -11.5 (+4.7, 9th)

The Thunder are 5-3 over their past eight games with wins over Chicago, Utah, Detroit, Golden State, and New Jersey.

27. L.A. Clippers : -13.9 (-2.4, 19th)

I attended Sunday's game at Golden State when the Clippers started Al Thornton, Eric Gordon, Fred Jones, DeAndre Jordan, and Ricky Davis while they brought Steve Novak, Jason Hart, and Cheik Samb off the bench, which was easily the worst eight-man rotation I've ever seen in an NBA game.

28. Memphis Grizzlies : -14.3 (+1.4, 11th)

I can't really blame Avery Johnson for turning down the Memphis job, but I think this situation isn't too far from being turned around, especially if Rudy Gay can return to his 07-08 form.

29. Washington Wizards : -14.9 (-11.7, 28th)

If you're a Wizards' fan and looking for a reason to be optimistic this is the best elixir I can find.

30. Sacramento Kings : -18.3 (-9.9, 27th)

It is hard to believe a $63.7M small market team can be this bad.
