Certainly by now most of you are already familiar with my Floor Impact Counter and Reina Value. (Please click here to familiarize yourself with the systems.)
I also use the FIC to calculate team totals, both by game and for the season.
In order to determine my team rankings, I have calculated the difference between a team's own FIC per game and their opponents' FIC for the entire season.
Team: 09-10 FIC Differential
1. Boston Celtics : 18.4
Kendrick Perkins probably won't ever be an All-Star in this NBA, but he has given the Celtics some youth and efficient production at center in a way that is not completely dissimilar to Rajon Rondo.
2. Cleveland Cavaliers 16.1
Memories of Cleveland's slow start are now a distant fade in the rearview mirror, but they are still behind where they were last season when they were 4th in offensive efficiency and 3rd in defensive efficiency, coming in currently at 7th and 4th respectively. The Cavaliers have been far better with Anderson Varejao (+19.5 on/off) and Zydrunas Ilgauskas (+3.3) than with Shaq (-6.9) and J.J. Hickson (-14.3).
Any team that has LeBron James will ultimately be elite, as he is the runaway leader in Season FIC with 890, almost 200 points ahead of the second-ranked Chris Bosh.
3. SanAntonio Spurs: 14.6
DeJuan Blair is the NBA's most efficient rookie and represents yet another excellent late draft pickup by San Antonio. Unlike a Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili, Blair was as well-known of a college product as we see after his two seasons at Pitt in the Big East. RC Buford and Gregg Popovich didn't exactly create him out of thin air, they merely were bullish in a bear market.
4. Dallas Mavericks : 10.4
The Mavericks have positive net PERs at every position with the exception of small forward, where they have just a -0.1. The biggest differential is unsurprisingly power forward with a +5.1.
5. L.A. Lakers : 10.4
The Lakers have dropped from second overall (+15.6) to fifth since the beginning of December. Injuries have been a major factor in that drop, as they have been fairly pedestrian offensively, currently ranking 12th in efficiency (down from 3rd last season). They have, however, made another leap in improvement defensively and now rank third.
6. Orlando Magic : 10.0
The additions of Jason Williams, Ryan Anderson and Brandon Bass have arguably had as much impact on Orlando's success as Vince Carter. His PER is at a career low and he was struggling mightily in the new year before hurting his shoulder in Washington.
7. Utah Jazz : 9.6
The Team FIC always seems to look too fondly upon the Jazz, but some of that has to do with the consistent effort Jerry Sloan demands from his team. The fact that Carlos Boozer has remained healthy, already playing in more games than he did last season and at a higher level of efficiency, has clearly helped their cause.
8. Atlanta Hawks : 9.4
Al Horford, Josh Smith and Joe Johnson are all in the top 30 in Season FIC and could give Atlanta a hatrick of All-Star appearances.
9. Denver Nuggets : 7.7
The Nuggets are improved offensively and despite a few injuries, Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups are each having better seasons individually than they did in 08-09.
10. Portland TrailBlazers: 7.4
The Blazers are 12-8 since Greg Oden was lost for the season, but they have been unquestionably inconsistent with losses against the Sixers, Clippers and Grizzlies, but wins over the Suns, Spurs, Nuggets and Lakers.
11. Oklahoma City Thunder: 6.0
Kevin Durant is ranked eight overall in Season FIC and Russell Westbrook is 36th, but Jeff Green is 81st with a 10.1 FIC40, which is just slightly ahead of the NBA median.
12. Phoenix Suns : 4.1
Jared Dudley is 59-for-121 this season from distance, which gives him an NBA-best 48.8%.
13. Miami Heat : 1.8
The Heat have negative net PER production at every position except shooting guard and power forward.
14. L.A. Clippers : 1.3
The Clippers could have been a fearsome playoff contender if Blake Griffin could have returned from injury healthy. He also could have proven his NBA pedigree to make the Clippers a legitimate free agent destination this summer. Any free agents considering the Clippers will now have to go on the blind optimism that he will eventually get healthy and be the kind of NBA power forward he universally appeared to be last June.
15. Houston Rockets : -1.2
Carl Landry has been consistently excellent for Houston, leading the team in PER at 22.5 and ranking fifth in the NBA in True Shooting Percentage.
16. Charlotte Bobcats : -1.7
The Bobcats rank first in defensive rating at 101.3 points allowed per 100 possessions, just slightly ahead of Boston (101.4) and the Lakers (101.5)
17. New York Knicks : -2.4
This is quite easily the highest the Knicks have been in our rankings since I created this system during the 07-08 season.
18. Memphis Grizzlies : -3.4
With a 19-18 record for Memphis, every team in the Southwest Division is above .500; no other division is even close to matching the feat as the Atlantic and Central have only one team above .500.
19. New Orleans Hornets : -3.7
The Hornets are 20-17 overall and 16-13 with Chris Paul in the lineup, with a lot of credit going to his supporting cast to keep them afloat while he was injured.
20. Chicago Bulls : -4.1
Chicago dropped from 15th in offensive efficiency last season to 28th this season, as replacing Ben Gordon's 57.3 True Shooting Percentage has proven to be difficult.
21. Sacramento Kings : -4.3
The Kings are three wins away from surpassing their total from last season, despite just 209 minutes logged from Kevin Martin.
22. Philadelphia 76ers : -4.8
Samuel Dalembert is having the best season of his career and has been on a tear in the new year, culminating in a 12 and 21 night against the Knicks just one day after the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
23. Toronto Raptors : -4.9
Chris Bosh has taken a monster step forward this season, posting a 26.5 PER, with his previous high being 23.2 in 05-06. All of Toronto's offensive metrics are very good (fifth overall in efficiency), but their defense remains too porous to compensate for on a consistent basis.
24. Milwaukee Bucks : -6.1
Brandon Jennings has seen his monthly production dip from 22.1 points per game in November to 16.7 in December and 10.5 in January.
25. Washington Wizards : -9.5
Gilbert Arenas was consistently in the high .500 in True Shooting Percentage before his injuries, but was at just .511 before his suspension.
26. Indiana Pacers : -9.8
A.J. Price has seen an uptick in his playing time in 2010 and has responded with a 16.1 PER.
27. Golden State Warriors : -12.0
Monta Ellis still has a long ways to go to get back to his True Shooting Percentage days of 58% when he was playing with Baron Davis, pre-moped, but he has been healthy, leads the NBA in minutes and has notched his PER up to a respectable 17.5.
28. Detroit Pistons : -13.8
The Pistons have had a nightmare start to the season, where nobody could have imagined Ben Wallace would be their leader in season FIC at this point.
29. Minnesota Timberwolves : -22.1
Within this Matthew Gordon piece, he offers a convincing argument that Kevin Love should be the big Minnesota keeps long-term if they have to split him up from Al Jefferson.
30. New Jersey Nets : -25.2
In an NBA where teams mail it in frequently on the second game of back-to-backs, especially against bad teams, it is difficult to fathom that the Nets have just three wins. |
