Second Round Picks
Players chosen in the second round can be signed to a variety of contracts, but almost all of them will be for the rookie minimum salary of $385,277. This means that if the contract is guaranteed for the whole season, the most he can earn is $385,277. The type of contracts can vary greatly. Some of the more common 2nd round contracts are:

  • Non-Guaranteed Contract: the player is no longer paid once he is cut. If he is cut before the season starts, he doesn't get paid
  • Partially Guaranteed Contract: a small amount is guaranteed so that even if the player is cut before the season starts, he can still walk with some earnings. Any amount above the guaranteed amount has to be earned by remaining on the roster.
  • Make Good Contract: usually refers to a contract that is guaranteed if the player is on the roster on opening day.

Most second round draft picks are signed with a team option for a second year. If the player makes it through his rookie season without getting cut, the team will be able to decide whether they want to bring him back for another year at the 1 year veteran's minimum.

Undrafted rookies are usually signed to Non-Guaranteed, Rookie Minimum Contracts. There are exceptions like when the player is a highly-touted foreigner or someone who impressed the coaches in summer league play. Then he may get some sort of guarantee.

Disclaimer: These are just examples of some of the more common contract situations for 2nd round draft picks and undrafted rookies. Actual contracts are negotiated individually by the player, his agent/lawyer and the team.

Helpful Tips
This is the Rookie Salary Scale for 1st round draft picks for the 2004-2005 season. The teams may sign a player ranging from 80% - 120% of the scale for the position in which the player was selected, and in almost every case the player is signed for 120% of the scale value. Unsigned players count at 100% of scale for the team's salary (against the cap).
