This is the final day when underclassmen like University of Houston junior George Williams can pull their name out of the June 26 NBA draft and return to school. In the case of the 21-year-old Williams, a three-year starter for the Cougars since he first put on a uniform -- forget about it.

"I think that whatever happens with the draft, it's a very slim chance that I will return to school," Williams said Tuesday.

Even if he goes undrafted in the two rounds, Williams will seek to win a position on the roster of an NBA team by going to a camp as an invited free agent. If that fails, he will pursue opportunities overseas or in a developmental league.

Williams does not have an agent and does not intend to get one, which is a requirement for retaining his option to return for his senior year. His father, Houston businessman George Williams Jr., is handling arrangements for team tryouts and other details.

San Antonio and Denver have brought Williams in for tryouts. He has had indications Dallas and Atlanta also may test his abilities to play small forward, shooting guard or a combination of those positions. He played mainly as a power forward during his first two seasons at UH, then at the small forward position last season, when the Cougars improved from 9-20 to 18-15 and earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament.
