Brad Parks of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that the Nets’ Anthony Johnson may have played his way to a guaranteed salary for the season. He was signed to a non-guaranteed minimum salary contract to be the back up point guard while Chris Childs worked his way back into shape. The NBA has a January 10th deadline on non-guaranteed contracts. After the 10th, all non-guaranteed contracts become fully guaranteed for the season. The Nets’ intention was to have Johnson around for insurance and have the abilitu to waive him before the deadline. Johnson’s play has made them re-think those intentions. "He's playing real well right now," Nets’ president Rod Thorn said. "Obviously, we'll keep him." signing him to a series of 10-day contracts after the deadline. But Johnson would have to clear waivers first, meaning every other NBA team would have a shot at grabbing him. "There are enough teams out there that need help at point guard, and he has been playing well enough that we wouldn't want to risk losing him," Thorn said. Childs may be ready to return on Saturday, but Johnson is likely a Net for the season. "You never know what's going to happen, so you can never say anything 100 percent," Thorn said. "But barring anything completely out of the ordinary, I would anticipate he'll be with us the rest of the season." |
