They try to save the whales, save the rain forests and save the rhino. Anybody want to help the NBA save the Eastern Conference from extinction?

With the free-agency period beginning today, the East could keep shrinking in stature if a few key stars leave their teams and head West.

The West has claimed the past five NBA championships, and there might be no end to its domination if the New Jersey Nets lose point guard Jason Kidd and the Indiana Pacers lose power forward Jermaine O'Neal.

Kidd and O'Neal officially became free agents at 12:01 a.m. this morning. About 140 free agents and restricted free agents are available. Players can't sign contracts until July 16.

The biggest free-agent names are Kidd, O'Neal, Elton Brand, Gilbert Arenas, Gary Payton, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone and Alonzo Mourning.

The Orlando Magic, according to league sources, will allow forward Andrew DeClercq to test the free-agent waters. The Magic had the option to renew his deal for $3.6 million next season but now hope DeClercq, a rugged eight-year veteran, will re-sign for less money.

The Magic, who have six free agents, have no plans to re-sign point guards Jacque Vaughn and Chris Whitney and forward Olumide Oyedeji. Forwards/centers Shawn Kemp and Pat Burke are on the bubble.

Orlando is turning to free agency to find a young -- but seasoned -- point guard. Antonio Daniels, who played sparingly with Portland last season, is high on the Magic's list. He may be in town sometime today or Wednesday.

Other sources say the Magic are interested in former L.A. Clippers center Michael Olowokandi. But with only a $4.8 million exception to offer him, the Magic likely would need the market to tip their way.
