Darrell Armstrong and Andrew DeClercq might not wait to see if the Orlando Magic can persuade Antonio Daniels, Speedy Claxton or Juwan Howard to sign with them July 16 or later. Glenn Schwartzman -- the agent for Armstrong, whose 502 games played are second only to Nick Anderson in franchise history -- had preliminary discussions last week with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Washington Wizards and the Miami Heat are also said to be interested in the 35-year-old point guard. And the Philadelphia 76ers, who could lose Derrick Coleman to free agency and aren't sure if Todd MacCulloch will ever play again, may be the front-runner to land DeClercq. Other than Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill, the two highest-paid players on the Magic last season were Armstrong and DeClercq. Armstrong made $4.01 million in the final year of a contract he signed in January 1999, and while no one in the Magic organization has said so publicly, the team might be able to split its $4.8 mid-level exception on both Daniels, 28, and Claxton, 25. |
