The 76ers' summer camp for rookies, free agents and selected veterans will conclude this morning with a final workout at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. With the team having entered a squad in this week's Reebok Summer League at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, four players will be let go today as the Sixers pare down to a 12-man roster for the event. Tomorrow evening, the Sixers will play the first of six games when they open against the summer league squad of the New Jersey Nets. Next week, six players from the Sixers' summer league team will hook up with six Indiana Pacers hopefuls and compete in the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City, Utah. Including yesterday, the Sixers held three straight days of two-a-day practice sessions in preparation for summer league play. "We wanted to get some fundamentals and some teaching in," said first-year head coach Randy Ayers, who will guide the Sixers in Boston, "and then to try to get some semblance of an offense and half-court execution. You're never going to be a great half-court team in the summertime, but you want to be organized and you want to try to put some key players in position to score. And that's what we've tried to do." In Boston, much of the emphasis will be on getting 6-foot-7 forward Sam Clancy (Southern California), 6-11 center-forward Efthimios Rentzias (Greece), 6-4 guard Willie Green (Detroit Mercy), and 6-7 forward Kyle Korver (Creighton) plenty of playing time to show what they learned this week. |
