Donny Marshall was having a conversation with his good buddy, a point guard named Jason Kidd, about the Reebok Summer League. Kidd was running through the list of Nets players, asking how they were doing. He ran out of players when he finally remembered one. "Oh, how'd you do?" Kidd asked. "You played, right?" "Yeah," Marshall replied. "I played." He played, all right. Marshall, known more for his friendship with Kidd and Kenyon Martin than for his ability to play basketball, is tearing up the summer league. He scored 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting Wednesday, coming a day after he had 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting with six steals. But does it matter? The Nets continue to add contracts, not take them away, and once the ink is dry on Kidd's contract, will they have any reason to keep a 30-year-old journeyman who is largely a practice player? "I want to be in Jersey," Marshall said. "I love Kenyon. I love Jason. I love all my teammates. I hope I can go back, I really do. I'm cheap. It's all relative. Hopefully, they'll find a spot for me. My goal is just to be there from the start to the finish. |
