With the Nets having replaced the elaborate design of Frank Gehry with a simpler, less expensive plan, a New York Times' reporter thinks the uninspired design will create a lifeless structure that should never be built. "If it is ever built, it will create a black hole in the heart of a vital neighborhood," writes Nicolai Ourousoff. Gehry's design represented "thoughtful architecture" and "a fervent effort to engage the life of the city below." Ourousoff sees none of these benefits in the new design. "Building this monstrosity at such a critical urban intersection would be deadly. Clearly, the city would be better off with nothing," Ourousoff writes. Nets' owner Bruce Ratner hopes to break ground in Brooklyn before the end of the year. |
