The Hornets got down to their 12-man opening-night roster yesterday by waiving forward Tim James and putting forwards George Lynch, Jerome Moiso and Kirk Haston on the injured list.

The transactions were necessary after last week's four-for-one trade gave the Hornets 17 players and created a numbers problem. The team waived Chris Porter last Friday.

James, a 6-7 small forward, averaged 1.5 points and 1.2 rebounds in 30 games with the Hornets last season after being acquired in a trade with Miami in the summer of 2000. He appeared in two games in the preseason, averaging two points and one rebound.

James was in the final year of a three-year, $2.35 million contract he signed as a rookie, so by waiving him the Hornets will have to pay his entire $837,720 salary for this season.

"Timmy just got caught up in the numbers," Coach Paul Silas said yesterday. "He's a good kid, and he really worked hard while he was with us. If he continues to improve, I think he can play in this league. He was going to need some more time, though, and we weren't able to give him that."
